wheel bearings

Hey i just got my front wheel bearings/hubs from maxx... can anybody tell me the torque spec on the retaining nut?

IIRC, 250~258 foot pounds

Most 1/2in ratcheting torque wrenches max out at 250lbs. At least my Craftsman does.

Don't make the same mistake I did, don't try to chisel the tabs off of the retaining nut that's on there. It's much easier to take it off with a socket (34mm or 36mm, i don't quite remember)

all the tools, including the big sockets, 1/2 torque wrench, and a 1/2 breaker bar can be rented at autozone completely free.
188-254 lbs/ft is what the FSM calls for.

I read that article....what is the point in tearing the old nut apart? couldnt it just be removed as a single unit?

You are right go get the socket that fits the nut. Makes it an easy job.

oddly enough, ive seen several people lately trying to take the nuts apart, ford uses these nuts on lots of different cars, its basically a self locking nut its not designed to come apart separately

I just did mine this week to 240. Either way its fine cause its tapered and it will stay safe regardless if its 10 or 15 off.

I just crank the impact up and zip them on and off with the right size socket, I just pulled my old diff yesterday and it took me a half hour to get it out. an other 2 hours to get the trans out. it's not hard onece you have done this a few dozen times.
