The grounding wire that attaches to the wood radio/column bezel on a g2? It's not like it's an actual ground or anything. I've left it disconnected at times by mistake and haven't noticed anything not working/lighting up. Am I missing something?

Antenna wire also works as a ground and I never use the harness ground anyway. I ground directly behind the deck to solid steel because the harness ground wire travels so far, you end up with more noise sometimes than you really need. The shorter the ground is, the better off you are but you really do need to find a spot behind the deck to ground to on steel and use maybe a self tapping screw and a cordless drill or a small drill bit and followed with a metal screw. Put a metal ring on the end of your ground wire and never use the harness ground.

I think you misunderstood what I was describing. A random ground wire is coming up from the wire bundle(?) under the center console and is "grounding" itself (so it seems) to the plastic/wood bezel. I don't see what purpose said wire serves.

Ohh, I wouldn't have any idea unless it's a ground for something on the bezel, cig lighter, shifter lights, rear window defrost switch, rear cig lighter ground, etc... I'm sure it's for something but I never have been back behind a Gen 2 bezel so really I wouldn't know what it's for. I bet GMAN would.

Static from? I'm asking because it is "possible" that someone might search  and then they'll know. I never noticed anything like he mentioned on the 93, 94 or 95 but it could be located in a different location.

x2, my curiosity has been spiked.

Static from the plastic, much like a balloon when you rub it or air moves across the surface.
Same reason you ground a car when you paint it.
