I use the term "Perfect" lightly. For the sake of this thread, this is just for Gen 2's. Take a Mark LSC, perfect paint, new tires, great shifting trans, good condition motor, no leaks, no check engine lights, air ride working perfect, blend door working. Everything working as it should. What would that Mark be worth? Or if that Mark were for sale, what would you pay for it?

miles? if it was -50k i would say$ 5-$6k depending on color/roof.

perfect perfect like showroom fresh, under 5k mi, with the plastic still on the seats, sticker in the window, like a ce i would say between $12k-$15k

real clean car no mods 75-100k mi $4000 MAX!

clean car 100k to 150k mi $3000 MAX!

just my opinion I am by no means walking kbb, nor do I have the money

For one that has everything "working"... 4k.

For one that had the usual issues and had the front end rebuilt, blend door replaced, air ride gone through, etc... 5-6k.

You have the perfect mark.
Its just not perfect yet. ;)

5k thats if i had the money and no mods and less than 50k

Yeah, I'm thinking of it in terms of how much money it's gonna take to take my rust free car with some issues and get it to the point of being "perfect". It's one of few cars I've seen (none of them from up here) that I consider even having the potential.

The reason I ask, is because I was approached by a guy here to build a Mark for him. I said $6k, and he said how long before he could get it. I was at a loss for words at that point. What he wants us a 98 Mark, with a fresh rebuilt motor and tranny, 3.55 gears with trak lok, fresh interior and paint. I would do my usual on the interior depending on the car I find, but dang what do you think?

How bout the better question...

How much will you pay to make your Mark "perfect"

...then bring me a check and your car

Good point.

My car at one point will be my "perfect" Mark after I dump another $10,000 into it to make it custom how I want it. I will put that much into it.

Now if I was a rich man then the perfect mark to just go buy would be that 98 CE that pops up from time to time that still has the plastic covers on the doors and steering wheel and seats that the guy wants like 25k for. I would pay as much as 18k for it.

It wouldn't be worth doing for less than $10K...always have to plan for the unexpected when dealing with a car 13-14 years old.

So wait, you know how to rebuild an engine? Install gears? Paint?? Pretty impressive.

Now lets be serious. So you buy a decient Mark that may have mechanical issues but is rust free and for the most part complete for .... oh hell, lets go cheap. $1000. Now you pull the motor and trans out. You send the trans for new clutches and filter and prolly needs a new solenoid and that runs $1000 (again on the cheap side). You bring the motor to a machine shop to have it rebuilt. Proper rebuild if all internals are good would be new bearings, rings, pistons, valve guides, valve lash adjusters and new springs. So there goes another $2000. You then take the car to a body shop and have them remove the 28 dings it has. That runs $3500 for a decient QUALITY job.

So now we are at $7500. But wait, theres more. It will also need brand new bags and compressor since the car is supposed to be like new. There goes another $1000. Also the new headlights. May get lucky and score a NOS pair on ebay for $600. But wait! What about all them bad ball joints and such. There goes another $800 for new inner and outer tie rods, sway bar end links, upper and lower control arms, sway bar bushings and toe link compensators. Cars pretty damn nice but not quite perfect yet cause there are some ripples on the rear glass. So there is another $450.

Now its done and you havent charged for your time to put this thing together. But its not quite done yet. There is still the cracks in the drivers side seat, the seat also is slow to move so the motors need a rebuild. Also there is that arm on the cup holder and the intermitant steering colum switch.

$6000 is WAY too cheap to build one.

Even if you found a Mark that was already with perfect paint and interior and window you will still have to pay $5000+ for that car. It will have near 100000 miles and still need something. Even if its just all UCA/LCA, tie rods and end links with maybe leakey rear bags you are still at $6000 and havent even touched the gears yet.

I would have to say I am in my 98 Mark about $4100 give or take. It still needs sway bar bushings, rear bags, front shocks are worn, needs a new rear window and about $900 worth of body work and paint work. Also the exhaust system sucks, bent wrong and rubs. So there is another $600 to make it right. So if all I did is fix that to make it stockish "perfect" then thats $6500 and that is not including my labor.

Sorry mang, $6000 is not enough. Dont sell yourself short.

For a Pristine, southern, rust free, 98 cordavon lsc with under 50k i'd pay upwards of 7500k if I had money to blow.
A typical rust free, no MAJOR issues 97-98 lsc w/ 50-100k i'd shell out 3500-5k.

Then again if I had money to blow I'd pick up that sc'd T. Red lsc for sale.

I've got another $15k I want to spend to make my car 'perfect'. 6k is to low. to do it right a paint job is going to be at minimum 4k.

Thanks for the reminder in how much i've put into my mark. :(

every time I stomp on the gas pedal I never regret or think I spent to much money on my car.

Bill your prices you estimated is Waaaaayy over priced. If I were going to pay that. My blown motor I am building isn't costing me that. I'd find a gen 2 for less than $1000. The key is knowing when and where to look. Case in point:
http://austin.craigslist.org/cto/2420427632.html
I wouldn't buy a body riddled Mark, I've seen a lot around the are and you'd be surprised at the shape these cars are in.
You're just about right on the money for a good quality rebuilt tranny. The place I go to, Circle D Transmissions will rebuild a tranny for me stock for $885.00. That was the price for the rebuild on my son's Mark. The rebuild on my son's Mark was also new bearings and rings for the bottom end, and a valve job with new guides and lash adjusters was $600. Paint and body, I got people to hook me up.
For here, perhaps "Perfect" is too strong of a choice of words. "Decent" is a lot better choice.
I can do it actually for about $4500 and have a decent profit to boot. He's still thinking about it, I'll see which way he leans though.

If that is the case you should rebuild ten of them then ship them up north on a car hauler to sell at $7500-$10K each.

I don't know about that...in the past month there has been at least three guys who have traveled below the mason dixon line to drive back a Mark that needs work...you know they paid at least $2500 for the car plus what it cost to get there and back plus the cars will need 2-3K of work. No doubt in my mind you could do three and sell them within 60 days at the price you want.
