What would you guys do

What happened to me after the 3rd meet in Boscobel was that the serpentine belt on my old Town Car shredded 39 miles south of Des Moines, Iowa. They towed it to a salvage yard and a new serpentine belt, another radiator and 200 dollars later i was on the road again. :D

im guessing the belt beat the radiator to death? or you overheated it and it cracked?

ive actually used 2 boot laces to make a serp belt before...but that was a dire emergency kinda thing

The part where the upper radiator hose connects to the radiator was cracked from one side to the other and the serpentine belt was iffy when i started the trip i should have replaced it, oh well. I no longer own the town Car.

If you were on a road trip and something catastrophic happened mechanically to your VIII. Oil filter adapter gasket, trans explosion, thrown rod,ect ect.. Moreso if the engine/trans died rather then a major leak of sorts...

I've always wondered what the correct steps would be if you're a thousand miles away from home.

Call up my brother, he's in the car transportation bizz.:cool:

I'd probably throw out an SOS to a few clubs I am in to see if someone local has a garage I could borrow. Otherwise I would likely have a transport haul it back home. This is assuming it is a thousand miles away. If it were under say 600 miles I could call family or friends with a truck and have a trailer waiting. U-haul rents them fairly cheap.

If you're road tripping in a car without a warranty, have cash available just in case. My rule is $1000 for every 1000 miles. Luckily I have never had mechanical issues more than 300 miles from home.

i use the dollar per mile rule too, never go bills without at least $60

Exactly. Not to mention, if you take the car anywhere for repair, and they see out of state plates. They break out the KY lube before you know what happens.

Well it wasn't a 1000 miles, somewhere around 400, but I just rented a car to get home and hook up the trailer to the Navi, drove back, loaded the car and continued on.

Years ago with less resources, I would've sold the car as is, where is and bought a clunker or a bus ticket. :D

I have had vehicle go bad on me and meet some damm fine people.

Just like when the truck lost the crankshaft while towing the Mark to Colorado for Mike. 3 AM, I called 911 in middle of Kansas, A guy came out at 5, loaded the truck on the rollback, hooked the trailer and VIII up to it, and towed it 20 miles for 60.00. Then the Chevy garage charged 60.00 to check the truck out. After renting a U-Haul van (which froze up from the snow), to tow the car to the Springs we had a buddy of Mike's use his F250 to take the trailer to Marysville and pick up the GMC and haul IT to the Springs. The Chevy garage did'nt charge anything for storage on the truck setting on thier lot for 4 days. The owner even open the shop on a Sunday so we could put more air in the trailer tires.
