It's part of the same EGR system. It's the EGR vacuum control solenoid. That's about all I know. The DPFE is on the rear of the drivers' side head, and connects electrically to the solenoid.
Thats the vac solenoid that opens and closes the EGR valve.
The DPFE is on the back side of the drivers side head. It just reads the air levels in the exhaust to know when to trigger it.

Exactly as Bill mentioned. The top of it is air bleed off filter. Basically the PCM uses the solenoid to regulate vacuum to the EGR valve. The solenoid is nothing more than a vacuum switch with inlet and outlet vacuum ports.

The PCM needs to know the difference in the pressure before and after the orifice in the EGR tube to control the egr valve opening.
The DPFE is basically a pressure sensor.
