So the owner of the CE I did a Coil swap on a week back had a MIL... (#4 plug dead). I told her before I even thought about doing plugs on this car that she also needed COP boots.

When I got the plug cover off and started to pull the first coil out I noticed that the hole was filled with oil and the boot was mush. Great, now I need to tell her she needs valve cover gaskets and bad. My last mark had a slight VC leak in hole #6 but it got wrecked before I was blessed with doing this job so I guess now is my time, she also needs a blend door but I will do that when it gets cooler. I know what it takes to do VC gaskets on a MK but I like to take it a step further and removing the hood so I can get my big self in there better... I got as much of the oil out of the holes as I could and got the new stuff in and of course they pull up to pickup the car just as I start it for the first time and it's burning off the residue in a large way… yea, that's normal after a plug job, nothing to see here… it'll burn off soon. As it turns out they knew it needed the VC gaskets replaced but had no idea most of the oil was leaking in the plug holes till I showed them what was left of the boots.

I may tell them to replace the MC since I'm going to unbolt it anyway.

I so love these cars, I think it's the challenge that does it for me. :shifty:

the entire fun part of BEING a mechanic.... is telling people that their car is fu(ked... its how we SURVIVE..

take some time and figure this out.
Humans were born with LEGS, not CARS

Therefore (obviously) a car is not a necessary item for survival... so shell out the cash for a ride.. or WALK ( or train yourself to run 70 mph)

i honestly dont understand all the compassion just because someones earth wagon broke down

my wifes car is still not running, even thou i bought a motor ( whole car) from Gman, it ran for about another 1500mi and ate crap..and i STILL owe someone $ for that deal

why would you replace the MC just because you have to unbolt it..because then you have to bleed the entire brake system too, you dont even need to remove the brake lines from it, just unbolt it from the booster and bend that crap out of the way...just dont KINK the lines

I was never one for the "it's just a piece of Iron" thing but I do understand your point since these days cars are throw away items for most folks. Personally, I still do this stuff for fun and since this is a MK8 forum I figured I'd share my tale of woe.

My girl has a freaking Yaris and even though I look like Grape Ape in the thing I still treat it with respect even though it's just a earth cart. Did an oil change on it last night as a matter of fact and even washed the bird doo off the little POS. I did the oil change without spiting on the motor like a shop owner I used to work for as a kid did.

Now, the reason behind wanted to replace the MC was because I am doing a bunch of other stuff on this car like brakes and planned to flush the nasty stuff that has been in there since day one anyway and a MC is cheap. I have always felt that some things are PM when it comes to an old car that is getting refreshed like this one is. The fuel pump, IAC, EGR, O2's, Alt and MC are up there on the list of things that need doing and since I'm doing the UCA'S too it sure would be nice to have even more room on the D-side... just saying.

I seriously do look like Grape Ape in the Yaris and I do hate that earth wagon!

thats the whole fun part of being bi-polar... one minute i care, next i dont

oh..didnt realize this was a resto job...now replace everything else that you havent listed above :)...and make a progress thread
