Trunk problem, or am I just paranoid?

Hey guys,

I am either becoming obsessively paranoid and creating a problem where there isn't one, OR this is perfectly normal - when I pop the trunk, it opens nice and smooth, but it stops quite harshly, and thus rattles. I noticed that those bumper-stopper things are missing quite a bit of paint too. Maybe there should be a rubber part at the end of them?

its normal, all it is, is a ele solinoid popping open the trunk, theres nothing to stop it from hitting the back, just keep your hand on it and guide it or get a air setup

Ahhh, thanks, thats a relief. I probably have some form of OCD or another.. :p

I might end up getting some rubber stoppers and taping them on.
 
There are rubber stoppers there already. At least there are on mine. That is what the trunk lid hits. Yeah, the part you are pointing at in the pic is rubber. That is why the paint is missing. It can't stick to flexible rubber. Of course, the rubber is a rather hard mix.
 
I dont like how it stops either. It shakes the car and I feel the lid will break something. Been thinking about putting something to eas the stopping. Maybe like some springs or something along those line to cushing it to a subtle stop
 
you could adjust the tension springs to take some force out of how strong the trunk opens
 
I pop mine and it doesn't even raise up - just pops up enough to open by hand. Is that normal?

Yes. The deck lid should not fly up and hit the stops. The lid is adjusted by a bolt (IIRC) under the spring mount. What it does is raise or lower (higher is better as long as the front of the deck lid lines up with the upper part of the quarter panel) the front part of the deck lid, thus keeping the the lid from flying open.

See above. The springs don't control how much the deck lid opens. It is a mounting point adjustment.

Thank you! Actually, the lid did not fly up when during sub-zero (<30F) temperatures, it only started to do that recently, since it has warmed up.

I will try to locate this bolt, but im not experienced when it comes to cars at all lol, so I snapped some pics of the trunk mechanism: 1 and 2. Is it in there, or even deeper?

I believe it's where the back of the hinge mounts. It should be visible with the trim piece removed. I'll try and get a picture; hold on.........

I must be blind.. I see a bolt but no circles :confused:

Edit: that's probably gotta be it. So am i meant to change the position of the arm, and move it all the way to the bottom (on both sides of course)?

Yes and no. You have to experiment with it. Move the hinge up/down a little at a time. Both sides should be about the same.

your right, They control how much force is pushing the trunk lid open and taking that down a notch will reduce how strong and fast the trunk lid opens, slow it down and it wont slam up against the rubber stoppers so hard causing a rattle

when i first got my LS the trunk used to open like a fighter jets seat ejecting, i adjusted one of the springs and now it opens nice, slow and smooth.




to the OP, where is the rattle coming from? because the LS only has two bolt holes to hold the license plate on, this is a common place for rattles to come from since it tends to "flap around" a little bit. if this is where your rattle is coming from, you can try a strip of double sticky tape at the bottom of the license plate to help hold it in place
 
Yes mine also pops open enough to lift by hand, it does not fly open. 04 here
 
Yay, i fixed it!

I noticed that the right side of the trunk was sagging a bit, misaligned by about ~5mm compared with the top of the quarter panel. So i loosened the nut, as suggested by LS4me, moved the whole arm up, and the trunk no longer flies open :D

Sorry, i guess "rattle" wasnt the right word. I was simply pointing out to the fact that it came up with such force so that it rebounded back. Thanks though :p
 
I prefer mine to just barely pop up and not fly open showing the truck's contents. I can't help but thing if it were raining and you popped you deck lid too soon, it would fly open and your trunk would get all soaked. I like it the way it is.
