Anyone know what is the simplist and cheapist way to get a decent cover(decal) for the trunk ? Nothing is wrong with the actual trunk lock or swivel for the lock cover. Just the decal has lost the red.

Any idea's ?

:waving:

Cover can either be pryed off or go inside the trunk lid & remove the bolts. If you pry it off be careful it's only plastic. I painted mine dark green with plastic paint after removing the remaining red, dryed over night then used Goop glue to put it back in the cover. Well the Goop ate the paint so I cleaned that up & shouved a flat piece of aluminum foil behind the plastic piece. Din't look so hot so I pryed the insert out again & this time used some regular gloss black duplicolor & put a piece of black trash bag behind it to dry over night. Next day I masked the edges, also used newspaper to cover a widw area around the latch & sprayed the inner part of the holder with Elmer's Spray Adhesive. There's a 3M spray that should work as well, the key, for me, is not to use a solvent or slow drying tube ahesive. Gave a little shot to the back of the insert, waited 30-40 seconds & set in place with pressure for one minute. Color looks great & it is firmly in place. The quality of the sanding will produce a quality cover. But any reasonably good effort looks good from three feet away. Piece of Cake. Ed

Here's my story.

The red on my emblem was also fading. I bought some other crap off ebay, and paid the seller a few extra bucks for his old trunk lock cover, so I could dig into it, and make a custom one.

Here's what I found: the plastic cover is just glued on...it is a lense, so to speak. The problem is, the lense is very brittle, and stuck like a fly on a rib roast. The corners began to crumble slightly as I tried to pry it up. it was not cooperating.

so, i saw the small hole on the back side, and used a awl to try to help lift it from the chrome frame...well, the area I was lifting from, was the chrome in the star emblem itself, and it screwed that up big time.

To, once I got the else off, I soaked the entire emblem in carb cleaner to strip the red, and chrome off. then I painted the star emblem Lincoln red, and the background(what used to be red) gloss gray....looked awesome....until it dried. so I gave up for now.

better to buy a used one, and experiment than to destroy your only one.

Or, have LVC hold a bulk sale "LMS trunk lock covers for $5.00 shipped!"

yea...ok, J/K.

i had the same problem you did, I went with the black LMS custom trunk lock cover and it looks really good. I'll keep it on there until they come out with a cobrastar one :soapbox:

I pried the plastic lens off and sanded and painted the back side. I used 3M trim adhesive to glue it back. Yes, the paint was affected somewhat by the glue, but only if your face is within a foot or so can you tell. Looks 10X better than the OEM which IMHO I had seen a lot worse.

Dude, completely relax. I just got the reflective in 2 DAYS AGO! Plus read my quote you quoted, where do you see me stating that I have Cobrastars in chrome? I will have them in about two weeks though. Whats the difference, when something starts off and grows thats normal. Its better then no interest and the product dying.

Any color you can imagine. No CobraStars yet. We are trying to do the CobraStars but they are SO small its been a nightmare trying to cut. I have to reduce a TON of detail to make it cutable. This may not happen at all because if we lose too much detail then it will be pointless.

I completely agree with you on this Geno!

Exactly because I just got ALL the colors in including reflective red 2 days ago.

No problem, Geno. I may order a red one when you get the cobrastar decal finished. :Beer

Ok...who has the gonads to make one that lights up with the brake lights?

anyway...lookin good...I'll be getting one soon...sho89mtx...order the one you want, and i'll take yours for $10.00 shipped...not to be cheap, but to help you take the leap for the red one...PM me if you want.

I thought of putting an LED behind it. I'm thinking you could sand the backside paint off leaving the star painted and imbed one or more red LEDs behind the lens. Making it look good when it's off may be an issue.

How 'bout Indiglo? :D
