just out of curiousity.... has anyone thrown a temp gauge on their tranny?

I have heard LS trannies arn't known for durability, but at the same time, it could be a problem as simple as too much heat (those of you that don't know, heat is an auto transmission's worst enemy).

I'm just curious as to this because I'd like to get some info before i think about throwing in a BIG B&M tranny cooler w/ temp controled fan. If it stays 200 or below as is, no need for it; but if it regularily gets up in the 210-220 or higher range, it could be VERY benificial.
 
I have no knowledge of any one using a cooler now, but I have a temp gauge going in real soon as well as an engine temp gauge....

Just need to install it all...

well let me know ASAP when you get it installed!! I've got a huge box full of parts waiting to go on my truck and included in there are a tranny temp gauge and B&M cooler; might have to order another one for the LS depending how it reads on yours!
 
all 'sport' option LSes have a trannie cooler.

it's in the lower passenger side of the rad.
 
yeah, my car has a tranny cooler, I thought all of the LS's had one but Quik knows more than me so I guess its just the sport packages.
 
right, I'm aware of the sport option tranny cooler... But that doesn't mean it's efficent enough to keep the tranny below 210-220 during spirited driving. Example... my F-150 4x4 w/ tow package has a tranny cooler, but the best it can do is keep my tranny sitting at 220 on normal summer driving, which is already on the high-end of a safe operating temp. Give it more gas or throw a trailer behind it and 220 degrees is just a distant memory!

As I recall, B&M seems to feel that 165-185 is the ideal temp range for a tranny; it's what all of their fans are set for on-off temps (on at 185, off at 165). Anyway, if someone has a gauge on their tranny (or as it would be, putting one on), I'd love to know your normal operating temp!
 
I agree with Nate - stock trans cooler are 'ok' at best. I've had trans coolers in both of my past Mark VIIs, one was inline with the stock set-up, and the other completely by-passed it. The difference in shift feel was night and day between both and the stock set-up - even during the summer months. Granted, the LS is more electronically controlled than the old AOD, but cooler is better when it comes to transmissions. Too cool is just as bad as too hot, though.

I'll probably wind up throwing a plate-type cooler in mine in front of the radiator with no fan...eventually.
 
no disagreement - the latest version of SCT LiveLink gives me the trans temp PID - so I can now keep my eye on it.
 
awesome... well keep me up to date! down there in TX, you've got to have warmer temps right now than me up here in MI... seems like my car doesn't even warm up until I've been driving it for a half hour! Damn single digits
