Trailer light wiring install

I've been thinking of getting a trailer hitch for my boat trailer. i have found plenty of hitches on the net but not much on the wiring. says it needs to be hard wired. Has anyone installed a trailer light plug into their Mark Viii? is it a major ordeal or pretty straight foward? any special parts needed other than a 4 prong plug?

Well............You will need the wire to go from the plug to the car.


Other than that, you will need to tap a Brake light wire, running light wire, and left and right turn signal. I would solder them, don't use those piece of crap crimp taps.

IIRC, I think i read in the owners manual NOT to splice directly into the lights. dunno why. computer? light out sensors? any ideas?

You should be ok with all the lights working, but you could get check exterior lamps messages when pulling a trailer.

I am still trying to get past pulling a trailor with a Mark VIII.

i like getting 27 mpg as opposed to getting 12 with my FS Bronco. its a small aluminum fishing boat. you dont even notice you're pulling it.

I recently wired up a 4 wire plug into my TownCar to tow a camper.

I used 3 quick connectors similar to this guy http://www.wiringproducts.com/contents/media/1230h-outlined.jpg .

One wire (white) goes to ground, I simply screwed that under a bolt that holds the tail-lights in.

Using a test-light, you simply probe wires until it lights up WHILE your car signals (each side at a time), and lights are on.

It's very easy and simple, takes maybe 1/2 hour tops.

BTW - we averaged over 17mpg towing a 2500lb trailer with the TownCar for about 400 miles worth of driving. An F150 doesn't get that without towing a trailer!

Go to walmart, spend $8 on a trailer wiring kit that matches the plug on your boat trailer, and follow the directions on how to wire it up. I did my crown vic in less than an hour.

evidently, the electronics in our marks are too sensitive to be spliced into for a trailer. this thing draws the power straight from the battery. price: about $60. bucks.

Did you get your Mark all wired up? I'm trying to buy a '98 that I'm wanting to install a hitch on. We make small powerwasher trailers at work, and I'd like to start delivering some of them. I don't see a reason not to, it makes perfect sense to me.

I had a hitch on mine, simply spliced into the existing wires for lighting, towed >5000lbs across 4 states...

My 1997 Mark VIII had a U-Haul hitch installed before I bought it. I never used it but the wires were just spliced into the tailight harness and I had no error messages. I thought it would be cool to pull a little boat or U-Haul with it, or even a car dolly for those non-running Mark VIII project/parts cars. There is plenty of power for towing. I'd tow all day with my Mark before I'd try it with my V8 LS!

my stepbrothers 88 Mustang GT 5.0L 5speed had a hitch installed...they even notched the rear bumper for the hitch opening...could never figure out why.....some people is all i can say...also My 1997 Tbird LX sport had a hitch installed at one time as well...but it also had a cooler and other stuff added to accomidate...i removed all of it...crazy i tell ya
