Timing chain/tensioner?

I'd hate to thread hijack, but this I have related questions which searching only seemed to add to, and I didn't want to start a whole new thread for such a simple question.

I'm having the same problem with a tensioner failure, and my chain jumped a tooth the day before my birthday. This was back in September, and I've been carless since, researching, and reading. Some people say that in order to correct the timing you need 3 tools: the crank positioning tool, timing chain tool, and cam setting tool. one set i found however doesn't include the crank positioning tool and instead has the crank timing tool. others say that they have made their own versions of these tools, and even others say that none of these tools are absolutely necessary. Could somebody clear this up for me? I'm wondering if anybody has posted a step-by-step on doing it without the tools, or a little example of the tools they made themselves.
 
Yeah, I've read and come to the same conclusions, however i understood it was a matter of keeping all the cam loops flat at the top. I've never done it nor proclaim to know any of it.

Plenty of great fellas here that will chime in and keep us informed. Look like a nasty job but when mine ever needs this kind of fix, I'll be at my buddies shop with my sleeves rolled up, involved and learning.

Which tensioner(s) of your's have failed?

Secondary tensioners are relatively easy. Not much more work than replacing valve cover gaskets. I just didn't have the time nor the desire to do the repair myself.

Everybody does make it seem as if it is relatively easy, just involved. Seemingly the hardest part is shelling out the money for those special tools, something I'm hesitant on doing with people saying they're unnecessary.

I did just find a dude on the Jag. forums though who is letting people BORROW, not rent, the tools, as long as you have at least 100 posts on there.. maybe I can talk him into it with good ol' holiday cheer.

If you're good, you can do the secondary without the timing tools. It's just easier with the crank lock and the cam lock, and harder to get it wrong.
 
Christopher's Foreign Parts rents the applicable tools. A bit steep, but what would you expect from specialist tools?

The crank lock *can* be replaced by an appropriately shaped piece of round stock. You won't get the same precise location.
The cam lock *can* be replaced by flat stock. Note that the exhaust cam sprocket is a friction fit, so you normally have to lock the cam in place while tightening the sprocket. Otherwise it's easy to slip. Various interesting solutions have been done, like using very large wrenches.

If you're doing it yourself and not already inventing interesting solutions, I'd recommend just renting the right tools.

that tensioner is supposed to have plastic on it right? 2000 LS V8.
 
Just picked her up :D

Service report says failing secondary tensioner, and the cam timing was off. They reset the timing, changed the tensioner, new VCG that side, checked data, and road tested.

Total Damages:

Parts: 233.92
Labor: 339.00
Sales Tax: 16.08

Grand Total: $589.00

I'm happy. Could've been much worse. And she runs like a top now.

Dang, guess laborious prices are different here cause I would have changed everything for $300 in laborious. Its not that bad of a job, but I have had experience with changing it all.

COULD I have repaired it myself?

Most likely.

But there comes a point if whether or not it's worth my very limited free time.

I'd rather write a check, and have the extra time to spend with my kids. I've also become more accepting of the fact that I can just pay for things like landscaping maintenance, gutter cleaning, etc. instead of doing it myself. Ive started to think it's overrated.
