My uncle's 93 Mark VIII is running a bit hot. We replaced the water pump with a new OEM one and flushed the coolant system and that didn't help at all. I was thinking the oem thermostat might not be opening all the way. What's a good thermostat to run? I have used the Napa 180 degree thermostat in my Marks before but they are telling me it is discontinued.

My overheating problem was partly the fault of a non-functioning fan as well. The motor was just worn out to the point where I think a ceiling fan could blow more air.

I drilled out the rivets holding the old motor on the shroud, and bolted in a new Four Seasons brand motor from Rockauto.com. It pulls air like crazy now.

I'm actually having similar issues with my 98. My problem however is the engine heat gauge reads normal but coolant begins to boil and leak from the coolant reservoir...I'm thinking maybe my thermostat is stuck shut since i havent driven her for months. Any thoughts?

Thanks

probably a combination of the two at bad thermostat and a bad temp sensor. that's where i would start if the fans are working correctly. even if the fans are bad i have seen thermostats get damaged or go bad from over heating. and it would be a good bet that your temp sensor is bad as well. when you say the gauge is in the normal range. where exactly is it positioned. and does it go back to the bottom when the car is cold

Don't forget the coolant recovery tank cap. If it can't hold the pressure, the car may overheat or leak coolant out.

Yes and get the same pounds thats on the cap. if not it will overheat dont let them tell you otherwise at autozone
