Alright so in my quest to find the perfect car to buy next I have driven many luxury cars. Off the top of my head I can think of: 1996 Lincoln Town Car, 1994 Lincoln Town Car, 1995 Cadillac Eldorado, 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII, 1990 Cadillac Brougham, 1995 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight Regency Elite, and so on and so forth.
I decided to look into the 95-03 Continentals because they combine the Mark VIII's power, performance and sporty looks with the Town Car's smooth ride, roomy interior and more convienient 4 door configuration.
I found one nearby at the local Ford dealership. It is a white 1998 model with the nice saddle color leather, 110k miles for $5995 so today I decided to test drive it and here are my impressions.
First off, these cars look a lot more modern than my car does. They're a good looking car, not necessarily better looking than my '92, but I think its better looking than the 92-02 Sevilles, especially the 98-02. I bring this up because its the Continental's main competitor. I really prefer the rounded contours to the knife edge styling of the Sevilles, even though the Continental's styling is vaguely similar to lesser Fords such as the Contour's, and Tauruses.
I really liked the interior on the 95-03 Continentals, especially the redesigned dashboard after 1997. It has a very warm look and feel to it. I love the bird's eye maple wood trim. The dash is a lot higher than my deville's, but it still has good sight lines. The guages are very cool, when you turn the car on, the needles come on first, then the numbers light up. It's got a holographic effect to it, the needles appear to float above the guage. Of course, it's all digital, but it appears just like an analog dash. The seats look very warm and inviting. They're not as soft as the seats in my Caddy, but they have much better back support, and are heated too! (which work very nice.) The electronic climate control and stereo both work very well also. Overall, it feels much more modern than the deVille.
Out on the road, I noticed that the 4.6 Intech is a very nice sounding motor, a lot like the Northstar, but less throaty and aggressive. Its a quiet car, more so than my '92. But It doesnt feel as "american" as the '92 does. It doesnt have the hood ornament or long, flat hood that my car does. Those are too things I really dont wanna lose. Having such a large windshield and back glass was strange for me, there is some glare and distortion I wasnt used to. Anyways, the car has a lot of low end torque for a cammer. Its probably got more low end power than my car, and its a much smoother V8, and I know the Intech's would kill the 4.9 in the top end, but of course it would, it's got 75hp more! It's got a very nice adjustable steering and suspension. I could feel both working.
But I dont really like the idea of having a big powerful luxury sedan in FWD configuration, but thats really the only big drawback in this car.
I think I wanna get this next! But it won't be until atleast 2007, maybe 2008 when I get one.
Now I have something to dream about!
Any recommendations? Advice?
