Alright so in my quest to find the perfect car to buy next I have driven many luxury cars. Off the top of my head I can think of: 1996 Lincoln Town Car, 1994 Lincoln Town Car, 1995 Cadillac Eldorado, 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII, 1990 Cadillac Brougham, 1995 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight Regency Elite, and so on and so forth.

I decided to look into the 95-03 Continentals because they combine the Mark VIII's power, performance and sporty looks with the Town Car's smooth ride, roomy interior and more convienient 4 door configuration.

I found one nearby at the local Ford dealership. It is a white 1998 model with the nice saddle color leather, 110k miles for $5995 so today I decided to test drive it and here are my impressions.

First off, these cars look a lot more modern than my car does. They're a good looking car, not necessarily better looking than my '92, but I think its better looking than the 92-02 Sevilles, especially the 98-02. I bring this up because its the Continental's main competitor. I really prefer the rounded contours to the knife edge styling of the Sevilles, even though the Continental's styling is vaguely similar to lesser Fords such as the Contour's, and Tauruses.

I really liked the interior on the 95-03 Continentals, especially the redesigned dashboard after 1997. It has a very warm look and feel to it. I love the bird's eye maple wood trim. The dash is a lot higher than my deville's, but it still has good sight lines. The guages are very cool, when you turn the car on, the needles come on first, then the numbers light up. It's got a holographic effect to it, the needles appear to float above the guage. Of course, it's all digital, but it appears just like an analog dash. The seats look very warm and inviting. They're not as soft as the seats in my Caddy, but they have much better back support, and are heated too! (which work very nice.) The electronic climate control and stereo both work very well also. Overall, it feels much more modern than the deVille.

Out on the road, I noticed that the 4.6 Intech is a very nice sounding motor, a lot like the Northstar, but less throaty and aggressive. Its a quiet car, more so than my '92. But It doesnt feel as "american" as the '92 does. It doesnt have the hood ornament or long, flat hood that my car does. Those are too things I really dont wanna lose. Having such a large windshield and back glass was strange for me, there is some glare and distortion I wasnt used to. Anyways, the car has a lot of low end torque for a cammer. Its probably got more low end power than my car, and its a much smoother V8, and I know the Intech's would kill the 4.9 in the top end, but of course it would, it's got 75hp more! It's got a very nice adjustable steering and suspension. I could feel both working.

But I dont really like the idea of having a big powerful luxury sedan in FWD configuration, but thats really the only big drawback in this car.

I think I wanna get this next! But it won't be until atleast 2007, maybe 2008 when I get one.

Now I have something to dream about!

Any recommendations? Advice?

the inside cabin of the 98 is smaller then the 97, so you might want to check out a 97 and compare both

Dash actually isn't all digital...

The needles are part of a normal gauge cluster behind a dark piece of plastic lens. The guages are just a lighted electronic display (non variable) that lights from the top of the cluster unit down to a reflector and onto the gauge unit.

Just a FYI.

Electro lumniscent (sp?) is what it is called. It's similar to what Lexus and Infiniti use on a lot of their vehicles.

Now if I remember correctly, the 95-97 had four air springs, and the 98-03 only had rear air springs. Thats a definite bonus for the 98 for me anyways. Much simpler, less expensive parts to break down.

You are correct...

The '97 didn't have front air struts. Although more expensive, the all air sprung cars seem to ride and handle better. I'd seriously consider retrofitting the air struts to a later car. Look for a car with as many options as you can find, especially the Driver Select System. The adjustable dampers will be helpful in fast, curvy highways.

I would suggest you try a 98 Mark VIII.

The Mark VIII is sportier, and its RWD which is a bonus. But the Continental has a much more luxurious interior, and I think its a much better looking interior, and its much roomier inside. I have driven a '93 Mark VIII and the '98 Continental. Even though I prefer coupes in general. I would definetly take the Conti. The interior of the VIII just seems cheaper by comparison, and not as warm. :)

But the VIII is a much more modifiable car. It can handle well over 400hp, whereas the Conti is pretty much stuck at 275hp due to the FWD. But I may be wrong about this.

I'd buy a STS before I'd buy a continental....IMHO of course...I have always preferred the N*, but I got such a good deal on the Lincoln I couldn't pass it up...

N* is a more powerful motor, and arguably the better one, but the INTECH is still great, and I prefer the looks of the Continental.

Don't forget all the problems with it too.

seeing the fact that he owns 3 lincolns, I am willing to bet he is hating on the N*
no I don't think the N* are bad but they are worse then the Intech's. I would like to buy an STS but one of my neighbor's, he has an STS and it has been towed four times this year(maybe even more because these are the times i have seen it being towed)its a 2001 up model since it has HIDS. I will give a shot for the STS after my continental dies.(that doesn't seem close)

does anybody have any numbers on the 275 hp seville?:shifty:

n*'s compared to the intech? Not even close. In my experience with them through people I have worked with etc.N*s have alot more electrical issue's and head gaskets blow alot more often.

I have also heard the N* are much more problematic then the Intech motors. When I bought my Continental, I very well could have bought a Cadillac, but one of the main factors in my decision was enging reliability which was from what I read not as good in the N* line.

How does a 98-03 Continental compare to a 95-97 Town Car for reliability, luxury and efficency? I know the Continental is obviously more the "drivers car", but I think the Town Car is a better looker because its so long and low, but the Continental is much quicker and sportier. Which is more comfortable over the long hauls? The '96 Executive Series I drove seemed like it had reallly comfortable "easy chair" type seats, very very soft. Whereas the '98 Continental seemed as though it had a layer of soft material, on top of a layer of firmer material.

Out of the two, the Town Cars will last longer right?

Does anyone have 1/4 mile times for the 94-97 Town Cars?

The 95 - 97 Town Car 1/4 mile will be around 17.5 while the 98 - 03 Continental is around 15.9. IMO, the Town Car in the long run will probably have fewer major problems due to the fact it is RWD and the achilles heal for the Continentals is the FWD, but you are compairing two different year periods, so it's hard to compare apple to apples as the Town Car is already older and will naturally have more problems.

As for which is nicer, I think the Continental is much more sporty and it does have a more powerful motor (260/275 v. 210) mostly due to the DOHC v. SOHC designs, but in turn you get problems with the FWD System and it does have a firmer ride (even with selectable suspension like I have) than the Town Car. I personally like the slightly firmer ride, makes it feal more connected to the road. Side note, the 98 - 03 Continental is slightly shorter in length and shorter in height then the 95 - 97 Town Car (Cont - 207"/56"; TC - 218.9"/56.9").

If you compare apples to apples 00 Cont and 00 TC the stats are a little different:
Cont: 275 HP, 208.5", 56"
TC: 205 HP, 215.3", 58"

touring Town Car can run a 16.1 in a 1/4 mile. so its close to the conti's time

Yeah I would only buy a 95-97 Town Car, I really dont like the '98-05's at all.

17.5 1/4 mile time huh? Wow thats not too good at all, I swear that '96 Executive Series I almost bought felt like it had 8/10's of my deville's power, which around town is very comparable to a Continental's
