when i first start car the temp gauge is already half way up, as i drive it climbs and then the light come on but is not steaming. so i dont think im overheating. could the sensor be bad?
please help!

I would say a sensor has gone to fritz.. I'm sorry I'm too lazy....BUSY to look it up for you.. Idk if it's the CHT that controls the temp gauge or what off the top of my head..

no - it is under the intake just inside the back intake port on the passenger side.

Do some reading around here. There's lots of threads about the cooling system and its various problems. A search for "overheating" and a few hours reading will help a lot.

How long have you had the car? Done any service yourself? How long has it done this?

You could easily have some cracked parts that are letting air into the system, and thus letting the car overheat.
When mine was messed up, it'd go from normal to overheat within three or five minutes.

If I understand him correctly, it reads normal (fully warmed up) engine temperature even when the engine is cold. I agree with the probability of cracked cooling system parts, but that wouldn't keep an engine a full temperature over night when it isn't running.

i replaced the coolant tree, thermostat, degas bottle and bleed it according to info found here. i can drive my car locally without a problem, as soon as i get on highway it starts to climb until reads hot and reduced engine power.

Okay, I may have misunderstood.

First thing in the morning, after the car has been off all night, turn the key to run, but not to start. The gas gauge will rise to indicate how much gasoline you have and the check engine light will be on. Now look at the temperature gauge and see what it reads. (This is all before you start the engine.)

Does it read "C", or is it at the midpoint?

If it doesn't read "C", then the temperature sensor is probably bad. If it does read "C", then you probably still have a cooling system problem.

The temp gauge was cold this morning instead of half way up. I dont know where to look. Thanks in advance for all your help

If i turn the heater ctr unit off, it starts to overheat right away. Could this unit be bad?

That tends to indicate that your thermostat is stuck closed, radiator is clogged, or (less likely) your water pump has failed.

Does the top radiator hose get hot?

Replaced thermostat, water pump, coolant tree, degas bottle and bleed it acording to instructions found here.

A suggestion and some thoughts...

1. I think it would be worth it to remove the thermostat and see if the car still overheats. If so, we'll know it's not the thermostat. If not, you'll know to get a new thermostat and make sure it is installed in the correct direction.

2. Water pumps sometimes are sold in two versions, each for opposite engine rotation direction. If you somehow ended up with one that turns in the wrong direction, it would still pump, but it would pump at a very low rate.

3. I haven't heard of a clogged radiator on an LS, but it certainly has happened on other cars.

The reason it isn't overheating with the heater on is that the heater core is like a mini-radiator. This suggests that either your radiator isn't working, or coolant isn't flowing to it. Is your hydraulic fan working?

i turned the heater off and automatically temp started to rise. steam coming out of degas bottle. i have owned only imports like acura rl, maxima and diamante this is my first domestic and im not happy for i can seem to enjoy this vehicle which i wanted for their looks and comfort.

from time to time is an understatement. if you love your car because of its problems, you have too much time on your hands.

for being a tech and owning an ls, youre not very helpfull. so thanks for nothing!!!
