I have a 2000 LS with the v6. I bought the car with a bad rod bearing. The machine shop wants to much money to fix it so I was looking at putting a 2000 taurus dohc v6 in it. The junk yard wants $350 for the taurus motor and $1300 for the LS one. Has anyone ever done this swap? I have searched both this site and google and havent seen anyone who has done it.

I have looked up both motors, same block, and heads. Unsure of pistons and cams, different compression LS 10.5 Taurus 10:1. Would the computer be smart enough to adjust to the lower compression?

what bumps the LS compression? different pistons?

Has anyone done this with good results? If the car is a little slower its ok, just dont want any codes or running issues.
 
seems like a crazy idea to me. im no mechanic, but good luck.
although i would almost assume some sort of issue will arrize and might casue more headache than saving a grand on a different motter may be worth. ya konw?

you get what you pay for...your looking at saving pennies when it is going to cost you dollars to get it right....

It's a fair question. Even when the same engine really is used on front wheel drive and on rear (right) wheel drive, there are often differences that you might not spot. I forget which one, but I remember there was one that the water pump rotated clockwise for one arrangement, and counter-clockwise for the other. I don't recall if it was a matter of belt routing, or if the crankshaft rotation was reversed too.
 
if that's the case in this scenario then the starter would be different as well because it would be cranking in the opposite direction.
and I highly doubt that ford would design the same block to rotate in different directions.
as far as I know the only engines that rotate in the opposite direction are marine applications. but I may be wrong.

Whats wrong with his ?. Just one example you cannot put a DOHC 4.6 out of a FWD conti into a Mk8 even thought there the same family the bellhousings are way different.I did an engine swap in my V6 LS and I looked into using a v6 from any other Ford and was a NO GO. Bellhousings different on FWD cars.

Same engine, same rotating direction, different bellhousing.
 
okay I'll correct myself on the marine application rotating backwards....they used to rotate in the opposite direction..bc of something to do with the transmissions. But they have upgraded the transmissions and today they all rotate in the same direction as automotive engines.
 
I think I was thinking of the Ford minivan or suv 3.0 has differnt bellhousing. The taurus looks like it might be the same. There are alot of little changes Ford makes and I didn't want to risk problems with interchange. I just bought a LS V6 and no worries. I know how he feels though the Gen1 v6's are pricey and the gen2's can be had for as low as $500. I do know for afact the front timing cover totally different on FWD.
 
Engine Swaps

I haven't looked into this because I'm pretty focused on the AJ engine series. But it's usual for Ford to use different add-ons like bell-housings and timing covers while using the same basic long block for several applications.

If stripping a bell-housing is a scary task, I'd not go in that direction. But for many of us, a bell-housing and a timing cover is no more than a few extra minutes work to remove and then tighten a few more bolts.

If it were me, I'd look closely into the real possible differences. Offer to buy lunch for one of the more knowledgeable techs at the local dealer. Then you're in better shape to make a decision.

Of course changing an oil pan and timing cover are not on the hard list. Its the stuff Ford changed that you don't know about that bite you in the butt. On early 2000 v6's like mine the cams have like 36 teeth on the sprokets but next year they switched to like 42 teeth. This gets picked up by the cam sensors and i didn't want to mess with that. I have put different engines in the cars before and it just stinks checking this and that. Where as you can take out an engine and install engine done. No guessing. Plus I got lucky and got my 500 mile engine for 600.
 
Im a bit surprised that no one has done this. $1000 dollars, unless im on the ferrari forum by mistake, is alot of money to me to save. I have called junk yards that have verified that the block is the same, the pistons must be different because the compression is higher. The heads are the same minus the cam...However when you look up the head on autozone it says the heads comes with the cam. So im not sure about the cam. I know that the cam sensors are different.

I would love to try the taurus motor in the car but im afraid the LS computer wont be able to adjust to the lower compression... However I did notice that a 2002 LS V6 is way cheaper... I can get one for $450-500.

So my next question is will this motor work for me? I know this year it jumped 10hp, and i think this was the year they changed the valve train...different lifters. Is the 10hp increase a cam difference or head or ecu?

I think you will run into way too many problems trying to bandaid a Taurus engine into a Lincoln. There are tons of variables and potential roadblocks that it is almost certain that you will save time and money in the long run just going after another LS engine.

maybe not a ferrari forum, but this is a lincoln forum. we ALL understand how expensive this car is to maintain, you got to pay to play. it takes a lot of time and research to figure out if this is possible. time is money, and in the end, by the time you figure out if its possible it might have just been better to get the right part. i know how many hours of overtime i need to work to make up for it. and let not even think about all the time wasted if it turns out to not be compatible.

The Gen 1's v6's are pretty close to same. They change little things like oil pan and such. My 2000 oil pan does not have a bolt on door panel like later ones. Later years also have another sensor on the front of the fuel rail. I used later fuel injectors and holder plates with fuel rails just left sensor in but not hooked up. Also then never changed lifters cuz they don't have lifters. They use shim on buckets ,mechanical cam setup. Now others call them different. Just checked Ford calls them Tappets and shims.
 
ok so then if i get a 02 v6 it will work as long as i put my, intake, oil pan on it.. are the cam and other sensors the same?

or can i use the 02 style intake? i am a HP junki after all every hp counts lol
