T-Stat

I read on another forum that running a 160 degree T-Stat is "You run the risk of never reaching operating temperature and forcing the computer to run rich (its called open loop) all the time. Its a bad idea on EFI cars." Any ideas on this?

Never had tht problem in 9 years. It doesn't actually run at 160, my car at idle with the fans on is at 175ish, with the stock one it would idle at 205ish.

It doesn't actually run at 160, ...

Ditto here.

The 160 t-stat opens at 160, but that doesn't mean the car runs at that temperature by any means. My running temps on the highway are maybe a tad cooler in cold weather, but for no more than I drive it in such weather, it doesn't concern me at all. In moderate or warm weather, normal operating temperatures are no challenge at all.

The 160 T-stat may not be for everybody but it's certainly not what some potray it as.

OMG! that pic is sic geno. 24.7 mpg doing 145mph...haha. just did my exhaust 2 1/2 weeks ago and for some reason my MPG seems to be dropping. not too rapidly, just staying in the range of 19.8-20.3. depends on the flow of traffic etc...etc.
That was 'AVERAGE' mpg. Heck I can gun it up to 100 and let off the gas, reset the computer and show 88mpg average. His 'instantaneous' was around 8 is my guess.

Wait a minute. How can changing a fuel filter increase mileage? If you have a clogged filter it will restrict the amount of fuel and might make the fuel pump work harder. But it seems to me like the first thing you'd notice is it running out of fuel at high RPM and high engine load where fuel demand is greatest. Cruising on the highway at 80 is not high engine RPM and load by any means, even moderate acceleration shouldn't be affected.

Tell me where I'm wrong.

160 thermostat made by "stant" P/N=133396

Been using this thermostat since 2000 and put the majority of 378,000 miles with a 160 stat.

My cars temp guage never goes above the "L".

Does anyone have any step-by-step how to's on getting to the thermostat? I can see it, but how do I get to it? Is it accessed from the top or the bottom?

From the bottom baby.

Long socket 8 or 10 mm. I forget. But you need 2 feet of extension of the socket to get to it easily.

if youre gonna change the thermostat, might as well change everything, i got all the coolant hoses, and a 180* stat........that ive had since....... like Nov. of last year, lolol .............i did valve cover gaskets on my pass side two weeks ago, now that im gonna be diggin around the driver side doing hoses im doing the driver side valve cover...........im gonna have FUN :D , thats what im doing at least, 10 year old hoses gotta go.........

Got the T-Stat changed to the 160 degree one today. What a pain in the ass that was. Laid on my back and started to disconnect the hose from the bottom of the radiator to the bottom of the T-stat housing, and leaked coolant in my face twice!. Overall the job wasn't that bad.
