sulfer smell?

the other night, i jumped on the highway and put the petal to the floor, i got up to about 120mph, and then coasted at about 100-105 for 1/4 of a mile. when i got home, (2 min from highway) i noticed a "rotton egg" smell, kinda like sulfer. then i also noticed little "popping" sounds coming from under the car. i always hear the sound after my dad comes home from driving his bronco but i NEVER herd it on the lincoln. what is it? and is this bad?

You got the catalytic convertor hot, the popping sound you heard was the exhaust cooling off. No problem.

No problem, I have experienced the same thing on my car when getting on it and then stopping shortly after. that rotten egg smell is nasty.

The sulfer smell is typical of rich exhaust gases and the reason the cat got so hot.

Aging O2 sensors are the main culprit for something like this.

If the car has a few miles on it, it could never hurt. After a while, the sensors lose sensitivity, and mileage can suffer a bit.
