Steering Wheel - Slight Whirling Sound

so oem fluid was still in the lines, you just basically emptied the res and filled with this stuff?

is the oem fluid in the res the same as this xl-3 fluid?

Filling the res with only XL-3 would probably kill your power steering pump. I used the aforementioned quantities (50 mL XL-3/50 mL Mercon premixed) and then topped off with more fresh Mercon until the res was full.

I got a sound that almost sounds like it's coming from the steering column. It's a whirring type of sound, kind of like what an alternator sounds like under load or what a spool-up on a turbo sounds like. It is mostly noticeable when in a parking lot cranking the wheel. I don't feel any resistance in steering or lack of smoothness. It's a somewhat faint noise but is consistently there.

My initial thought would be the slip-ring making noise as they tend to do that when dry or getting worn. After reading this thread, the symptoms sound very similar to that noise. Both in the description of the sound and the conditions under which it occurs.

For those who had this issue, was there a noticeable or attributable symptom other then the whirring noise? Some mentioned that the steering felt rough or clunky. Was that true for everyone who had the issue?

The other thing is the TSB is 02-05. Mine is an '06. Think it would still apply?

Other than the whirring noise, creaky door hinge to me, the steering had slight resistance to it. Just wasn't fluid or smooth.

After putting the friction modifier in, it made the sound half of the time but with a different pitch. 3 months later it is gone.

This might be unrelated but my steering does have a clunky play in it when turning right. Its definitely part of the steering gear, but not serious enough to do anything.

Putting it in won't hurt.

Mine too. I believe it is the intermediate shaft. I will have it replaced when it gets too bad to ignore.

Better start shopping for a good used one now. They stopped making them a while back.
