so i drove a thunderbird the other day with the sst in it and it starts in first gear. I know that if i hit the gas 60% or more my car drops into first.

What i was wondering was is it something in the computer or the the sst that made ours start in second. I'm assuming its the computer being that there isnt anything other than two micro switches in the sst.

Has any one else looked into this, i would rather have paid the gas gussler tax than have to start in second gear.

Gen II starts in first gear, SST or not.
Gen I doesn't.

That was the difference.

we haven't been totally successful with the SST in 1st using the SCT program. We were able to get our hands on a European PCM code (which allows SST in 1st) and put our tunes on to it - however - for some reason the upload is a bit hit-and-miss on which PCM are able to take an upload of that code base.

WIthout it - we have not been able to find the hidden 'switch' to enable SST in 1st.

Yeah i don't remember what year the thunderbird was, it's one ove the managers at the dealership. But this is all good to know, I didn't know that the second gen ls's started in first either.... may have to do some more research.

It would probably be nearly impossible to pull the code scripts from the pcm's and try to decipherer it and find the differences. if i knew how to write code and and had the software theoretically you could just load it onto the pcm to make it think how we wanted.

I was a lucky one where an SCT tune from Torrie let me use SST in 1st gear on my 1st gen. He told me that it didn't always work, but it did for me.

The SST shifter has nothing to do with what gear the car "starts" in, UNLESS you are in SST mode. Then the car will "start" in whatever gear (up to 3rd) is selected. In non-SST mode (D5 or D4) the transmission will start in the factory programmed gear; 2nd for '00-'02 (unless >60% throttle is applied, don't come to a complete stop, blah, blah, blah) and 1st for the '03-'06.

All the SST shifter is is a shifter, not a transmission calibration.
