SST back for upshift mod

Great idea Sully.

That was one of the first things I noticed about my car when I bought it, that the pattern was backwards.
Race cars that use sequential shifters are forward for downshifts and back for upshifts; motorcycles are also set up this way because as Sully pointed out, it just makes sense.

i always thought it was backwards from the factory, this is the greatest thing EVER!

Jet throttle, boat throttle, its all backwards for more power.... make sense to me.

Id like to hear what people have done it thought once it was done

just did it last night...

Love it! It's much more intuitive now. Plus it does actually seem easier.

I tried to switch the pins... no go. I didn't want to break anything, and I couldn't clearly see how they are supposed to come out of the harness.

So, I cut the wires about 2 inches up from where they go into the harness, and used some snap connectors from walmart.

Whole project took me about 30 minutes. In the dark, with a flashlight.

you mean inertia, not gravity, right? Unless you are driving straight up, that is.

Technically gravity is correct because gravity and the force you feel due to acceleration are the same thing according to Einstein.

In forming his General Theory of Relativity, Albert Einstein used his famous thought experiments to justify his postulate that Inertia (acceleration) and Gravity are equivalent. Although they are closely related they are not equivalent. Inertia is a requirement of space. Gravity is one of the primary forces of nature that fulfils this requirement. The force of gravity arises from the “mass” created by the Inertial requirement of Space.

One of the ideas that misled Einstein to his conclusion was that a body dropped in an accelerating elevator behaved in exactly the same manner as it would if dropped on the surface of Earth. Actually, the effects, in both cases, are similar but not exactly the same.

The truth is, Gravity causes bodies, dropped from various heights in the room resting on the ground, to fall at different rates of acceleration (due to their different distances to the center of gravity of the Earth) where as, all bodies in the accelerating elevator "fall" at the same rate. Also they do not "fall" parallel to each other under the influence of gravity as they do in an accelerating room.

Since in both cases, the motions of the falling bodies are not the same, it is good evidence that gravity and inertia are also, not equivalent. Einstein may have known about these discrepancies but choose to explain it as a local equivalence. (It works in large space but not small space).

I for one did not switch the +/- labels. I didn't even remove the shifter. But the only reason I did not remove it was because I was in a hurry since it was dark out. And turns out you don't need to. Except to change those.

ive had it done for about 3 days now and i love it, it just seems more natural.

i dont know about the 1st gen guys, but for all the gen 2 guys this was very easy if you re-pin the harness it took about 15 mins, you dont even need to take the shifter trim off (until you want to change the +,- which i am doing today), just remove the cup holder and brake panel and there is two gray harnesses (they might be under a piece of velcro) the passanger side plug has the wires you need they are still red/yellow and blue/black on the side of the harness closest to the shifter but on the other side they are white w black stripe/brown w yellow stripe and white w purple stripe/brown w white stripe. it is much easier to re-pin the other side since the shifter side is very short. the pins you need to switch are the top two wires with the bottom two wires, they are the two wires on the top and the two wires on the bottom closest to the passanger seat if you look down while it is still plugged in

all you need to do is cut the tape back a couple of inches to give you some room then use a straight pick tool to pop out the white piece of plastic that locks in the wires then stick the pick in to the harness and pry out a little tap that holds the pin in, then pull the wire out, do this to all four wires then just switch the pairs, the wires just snap back in and pop the plastic lock back in place.

switching the =,- is very easy on a 2nd gen, they are on a solid piece of plastic all you need to do is cut the center section out making two small pieces then they just need to be glued into place and reassembled

I considered doing that to mine (first gen) but with the wedding being this sat and my engine bay being scattered across the garage floor right now, i havent messed with it. Thanks for solving the last part of the riddle! It seems more destructive but much easier than trying to get the shifter assy apart. What didd you use to cut it? Exacto knife or thin razor will probably work, but I'd like to know what you used.

hmmmm just reread your post.... I think i was WAY off. Pics or more info would be great!

It is true that I should not have brought Einstein into the discussion. I will point out that I never stated that Inertia = Gravity. In the future I will be more precise with my pointless comments. Shall we get into a discussion of the Higgs Field and Superstring theory? Lets go LHC! :D

They still haven't fired that baby up to full power yet have they?

I seriously doubt I have enough residual knowledge to back up a debate between higgs field, and superstring theory. Although I do enjoy the reading.

the piece with the +,- wasnt fastened in to the top shifter plate it was just sandwitched between the top plate and the light house, when i took it apart the +- piece just fell out, then i scored it where i wanted it cut and snapped it by hand and used hot glue to hold it in place until snapped it back together, because of the shape of it i wasnt able to just flip it

sorry no pics, i only have internet at work and cant upload anything

how did you get the two pieces of the shifter assy apart? is that part you scored and snapped?

there are 4 plastic snap in locks that hold the top part (the part you see while driving) and the bottom part which has the lights (the bottom part comes apart even more to get to the switches. i just had to stick a small flat screwdriver into the slots to release them, no the part that i scored and snapped was the +- piece it was in a backwards "C" shape that went around the shifter rod i snapped the center part of the "C" out making two smaller pieces, maybe the 1st gen is a little different

yeh i was looking at one of your pictures and the shifter does look a lot different, yours is down below the top console part and on the 2nd gen they stick up through the dash pannel so the dissambly is probably different
