With my stock non-alpine head unit, with the stock wattage etc., what would be the best kind of speakers to put into it? I've heard things about 2-ways, 3-ways, 4-ways, 5 1/4, 5x7, 6x9... I'm just lost. Any ideas on a good brand and speaker? I have two 10's in the back if that makes any difference.

i would look at 5.25" speakers first, then 5x7's. to get the best sound you will want an amp, especially with subs in the rear. If you don't want to go that route I would look at 3-way coaxial speakers. They typically sound a little cleaner than the 2-ways, and 4-ways tend to get a little fuzzy. you aren't going to get real impressive sound or volume out of these types of speakers without an amp, but they will match up best with that head unit and wattage.
what type of price range are you looking at? just the front doors or all 4?

i personally just changed out my headunit to accompany the 2 12`s in my trunk and you would be surprised by how well the stock speakers sound with a new head unit. i didn`t want to do it at first because i have a 6 disc indash stock but the upgraded sound quality makes it a worthwile action. my subs can get very loud and i really dont need to upgrade the speakers. i would just want to in the future. plus u would be able to get the most out of u`r subs (more room for a custom sound) with a new head unit also. just an idea.

I would do the head unit swap first. Especially if go with something a little high end. Newer head units have built in perametric EQ's so you can do alot more with the sound then just bass or treble. If you go with 5.25 speakers, remember you will have to build pods or a baffle board to convert your 5x7 speaker opening to a 5.25. Bostons are good, alpine, focal, JL. I would stay away from your standard entry level stuff (i.e. sony, kenwood, JVC Dual)

once again i am a pioneer guy, never had any problems with pioneer. pioneer hu, pioneer 3 way in the front, pioneer 4 way in the back, and my pioneer tweets are on the way. i always run these straight off the head unit and they sound great. always get compliments on clarity. you can here all the words about a block away, if outside noise allows. i have had many friends buy expensive speakers and run an amp to them, unless you get the perfect setup with good expensive quality, you are going to have problems.
