just saw a commercial today for the all new Lexus LS. base 61k msrp: 8 speed auto tranny, 4.6l v8 380hp. they have an extended model that has leg rests like something you'd find in a Bentley. cars pretty nice, take a look at it.

Can anyone explain the point of an 8 speed? Don't some Mercedes sedans have 7 or 8 speed also?
 
I'd assume it's for better performance while keeping the MPG the same or even better. With more gears to choose from you can keep the car in the meat of the powerband where it's the most efficient. Sort of like the CVT trannys.

The LS 460 L offers an available Executive-Class Seating Package which includes a power-adjustable right-rear seat with heating and massage functions as well as a legrest, a wood-trimmed table concealed in the center rear console, and a DVD Rear-Seat Entertainment System (RSES) with a power-integrated nine-inch LCD screen. Other amenities include available power-operated rear-door sunshades that shield rear passengers from the sun and cool the entire cabin, and an available cool box which keeps beverages cold.

These features are added because this car will likely be chauffeur-driven in other parts of the world.

Nice, I sat in the back in one of the long ones in LA auto show last year, not a Maybach, but still very nice.

It's a platform of it's own isn't it? The ES is based on the Camry platform as is the Avalon so these aren't shared either. That and it really doesn't look much like a Camry either.

I'm pretty sure the Avalon and Camry are separate platforms. The Avalon is friggin HUGE compared to a Camry.

But yeah those Lexus LS cars are pretty nice. Isn't that the one that can park itself?
 
I sure would not buy one, even if I had a hundred grand to buy a car with...I'd much rather have a vintage Mustang....with "Shelby" on it somewhere...
 
throw some 24's on the Lex 460 with some tint vertical doors and too many tv's to count. atleast thats what i would do.
 
The GS looks better but still a nice car. I like the GS 460H (can't remember what the number is actually), the hybrid one. Its kinda built around the same idea as the Buick T-Type, take a new technology and a small engine and instead of trying to make it as efficient as possible, take it to the performance of the larger engines with near the economy of the smaller one.
Oh and the ES and RX Lexus vehicles are on Camry platforms, the Avalon is probably based on its archetecture but not the same platform, and the rest of the Lexus cars are unique. The SUVs are like any other luxuy SUV except for the XC90 and the Land Rovers, rebadges of the more utilitarian versions.

Yea since the Avalon's inception back in '95 I believe the two have been based on the same platform with the Avalon's obviously being the longer of the two. Today they're still loosely related as you mentioned. Just adding to the list here, the '08 Highlander will be based on that same platform.

Can't say I particularly care if it's one the same platform as the Camry or not. I still think it looks like a Camry. And that's not a compliment.

Performance and fuel economy mostly, but that too.

Mercedes uses their 7 speed auto in just about every model they make now. If it has less than 500 ft lbs of torque chances are its got the 7 speed. The only exceptions being the 4 Matic (AWD) versions, but that wont be for long.

It keeps the engine in the best usable power band when you need to get up and go, and keeps the engine revs at their lowest when you don't, to get better fuel mileage.

This "more gears" thing wont stop at 7 or 8 either. 10 speeds aren't just for mountain bikes anymore. :p

I really don't see it looking anything like a Camry. It has way more luxury and performance to it. along with enough definitive styling that make it no where near a good comparison.

Anyway,

The LS line of Lexus has gotten some of the best reviews since they came out with the LS400 which even today the early LS400's are worth a good amount even with high mileage for a fair reason. They are great reliable cars and I wouldn't see any of the newer ones lacking anything in that trait at all.

I cant afford one but I would take one if I could and I think if any of you guys that care for luxury ever would sit in one and could easily afford one you would snag it up too.

But if you don't care for luxury I guess a "vintage" Shelby would be nice enough:)
 
mercedes transmissions get the consumer report black dot every year because they suck big time, that and their electrical systems. the japanese must be doing something right since lexus's parachute resale has surpassed mercedes and is closing in on BMW.
so what if its a flashy toyota, our cars are flashy fords all dug from the fomoco parts bin.

Lexus is slowly putting more powerful V8's in their lineup which is more than you can say for Lincoln right now.

That's true, but it sure is a much better value than the European rivals, although, I would buy a 750li or an S550 over the Lex any day.

If that were true, the LS wouldn't have been a money-loser, and it would probably have been improved and still be in production. There are a LOT of parts in the LS that aren't found in any "FoMoCo parts bin;" it has very little in common with anything else Ford made, other than the '02-'05 T-Bird and the S-Type.

IMHO, it's mostly upstaging. Here's what Bob Vargo, GM’s assistant chief engineer on the Ford/GM team that developed the new 6-speed ATX used on Ford's new D35s, had to say about it:
Vargo claims the 6-speed provides a definite improvement over existing GM 4-speed automatics in fuel economy, up to 4%. However, he doesn’t believe GM needs to evolve to 7- and 8-speed automatic transmissions, as some auto makers are doing.

“I’m not sure we know how to make a 7- or 8-speed without adding components,” he says. “I believe our 6-speed is the most elegant design for the consumer. As you add speeds, there’s a law of diminishing returns.”
