Well, after tracking performance data all year, recently some apparent trends started to appear.

All the above graphs show track data from the beginning of the season, left to right. Across the board, you can see a definite improvement towards the end - circled in the graphs. Looking back, the improvements came about as a result of two mods this late summer - the Baumann shift kit and a pair of Nitto 555R drag radials.

I averaged all the 1/4 mile data before the mods and compared it to the average of all the 1/4 mile data after installing the shift kit and mounting the drag radials.

My reaction time improved from an average of 0.748 seconds to 0.626 seconds - a 0.122 second jump. I attribute this to both practice and a better launch from the drag radials.

Likewise, the sixty foot times improved an average of 0.169 seconds, from an average of 2.329 seconds to an average of 2.161 seconds. Not bad for a rookie and drag radials on a 4000 pound pig.

I jumped a whopping 0.400 seconds quicker in the eighth mile ET with 1.38 miles per hour more, and an average quarter mile ET improvement of 0.492 seconds with 1.91 miles per hour more. The improved launch coupled with the much harder shifts combine for nearly a half second improvement in ET and almost 2 miles per hour in the traps - from an average before the shift kit and drag radials of 15.162 seconds ET at 73.84 miles per hour to an average of 14.670 seconds ET at 75.22 miles per hour after the mods.

The Michelin Pilots I ran for street radials before were no slouch, but at a good track, traction with the Nittos is much improved. The car launches much better now. The 1-2 shift at WOT is wicked, no more loosing ground to the opponent when the car shifts. The Baumann shift kit rocks! :steering

Driller, those are some awesome numbers.

Just a shift kit and drag radials. No converter, right?

And the 4:10's were in there before the kit and tires?

I've seen the videos of you leaving the line and it was just crazy to see how you left people.

Did you consider doing the Jmod or was it just easier to buy the Baumann. I have an extra tranny and I was going to do the Jmod myself. I can't stand the granny shifts anymore. This '98 might be the slowest car I ever owned.

I wish somebody had some real life info on the intakes. I might swap my '93 if I could pick up a few ponies here and there.

Nice Numbers.

Awesome job, Driller...

That engine is performing like a bat outta hell even after all those passes this year... LOL, what was the count... Like 75 ? :Beer

Also, Bryan, if that 1st Gen. intake fits, you should port and make some shorter intank runners on it, you'll definently see some better numbers, IMHO... Joe ( Ponyfreak ) knows all about intakes and customizing em... but just maybeee Geno knows a bit more.

HMMM....

LvC should produce the first "Mark 8 BUILD OFF !" Maybe Discovery Channel can host it... :give

Thanks guys. :D

Yeah, the before/after was just the shift kit and drag radials. The 4.10s were in there all season.

I did consider the J-mod against the shift kit, but at the urging of Geno, Ray and others, I went with the Baumann kit. I drove a couple cars with the kit on "max" and was sold how to set mine up. Studying the instructions for the shift kit and the J-mod, they were quite similar as far as drilling the separator plate. The Baumann kit includes some shims, spacers, springs and an updated spool for the valve body as well as bits to drill with. The instructions were very comprehensive. Nothing against the J-mod, but IMHO the Baumann kit has a leg up on it. But I cannot objectively offer any experience on the J-mod. No changes were made to the chip which was also already in place. The chip improved the 'granny shifts' but the shift kit atop the chip is nothing short of awesome.

I had already upgraded the 1-2 accumulator prior to installing the shift kit. I also upgraded the 2-3 accumulator at the time of the install.

No converter yet, but this winter I hope to put in a nice high stall converter for even better launches. Also, I hope to install a modded intake. Only time and money will limit how radical of a project that becomes. I believe ther's quite a few ponies to gain with the intake. :Beer

BTW Jon, that's 96 passes this season. I may get to add a few more this weekend. :L

Good lookin out JP....those are some nice results for just DR's and a shift kit.....NICE!!!! Hope we can soon be doing the track days (after the weather breaks of course) and get some more runs in before I start the upgrades.

I too did the Baumann Engineering kit in my car. The reason I did not go with the JMOD was I really did not want to have to buy things that I would prolly never use again (drill bits....I know...I know.....how expensive can they be...right?) and like Driller said the Baumann comes with more stuff than just the seperator plate. Also, they have their tech service, which is one of the best I have ever dealt with. They are VERY knowledgable on our cars and their transmissions and after talkin with them they gave me some info, and I purchased some different spool valves and such since the tranny had so many miles on it. Now, depending on the performance setting you desire, you will have to drill the seperator plate, but they provide you with the appropriate drill bits in the kit. NO searchin the local parts store, or Home Depot, or whatever for the correct bits.....they are included. And, the instructions are ON POINT there is no guessing. They tell you exactly what you need.

Glad that we could help JP....I know you drove Jeremi's car with the SC in it with the Baumann kit in it, and I think you told me that the selling point for you was the drive in my car....basically stock with the shift kit in it. You made a good choice.....as you already know......lol :Beer

Very nice explanation there, buddy... :yourock:

BAUMANN SHIFT KIT ROCKS ! LIKE WHOA...

I sometimes get scared the way this thing shifts at times, I don't expect it, and BAM, my neck jerks hella back and all I can here is the screeching tires !

Lil' sarcastic but that's pretty much how it goes..
