does anybody know what gear i should leave my old shifter before switching to the new SST shifter??

i left it at 1 because the instructions said to put it there but it doesn't reach when i put it the new one

The instructions are correct, you need to leave it in 1. This means that the cable is extended as far as it can be. When you're putting the new shifter on you have to put it down to either the "-" or D4. If I remember right mine was a little difficult to work with, but it will eventually go on there if you work at it enough. How far is it from being able to fit?
