im trading in the ls for a brand new vw gti. im sick of the ls breaking and throwing weird codes.

that is ashame! but I cant blame you.Ford is having some major financial problems-looks like they cut some corners in manufacturing instead of management

Might want to take a peek at Consumer Reports reliability ratings for VW before diving in. Not knocking the GTI...Front Wheel Drive is very cute...just saying that if you think VW's are troublefree, think again.

My 2002 V8 LSE has thus far been FAR more trouble free than any of the 3 Jettas Ive owned, and also better than the E36 3 Series I owned. The 3 series was purchased brand new, 20 miles on it..pampered like nobody's business. But that didn't stop the timing case profile gasket from going, every interior door panel from "bubbling up" (vinyl separation from the backing during hot weather, when the adhesive would fail), front suspension bushings that wore out around 60-70k miles and were kinda pricey to replace, failed alternator, interior window switch bulbs that seemed to last 2 years max, IKHR Control unit that failed (same thing as our DCCV Valve), dot matrix displays that would slowly degrade, hindering the LCD readouts on the dash computer, Timing chain tensioner that would wear out, causing the timing chain to rattle like crazy...

Compare that to the LSE where I had a Stereo that went out under warranty, alternator needed replacing at 65k, valve cover gaskets (but coils are still fine) that leaked and needed replacing, degas bottle that cracked..and..thats about it. Which to me, is not an excessive repair record for 78k miles and 4 years. And none of those left me stranded, or even caught me totally offguard. Knock on wood, this thing is running about as smooth as it ever has right now. Engine running perfectly, with the new tires and Eibach's and replacement factory Sport shocks all around..the ride/handling is near perfect for me. Based upon other posts, I assume I can expect a coil or two to fail within the next year or so...but I have 2 new spares in the garage just in case, and I can replace those myself.

Hopefully my success with this LSE continues. The 5 year 0% loan is completed later this year, and I hope to keep her at least 4-5 more years before embarking on another car loan.

+1 - I never heard someone going to VW to improve their reliability....

A VW shop manager I know says he would never own one off warranty. If you buy it new - it will be like most new cars - fine until it gets old....

And to think I was considering a Jetta before I bought my LS. I have always heard good things from owners about good gas mileage on VW, but nothing about it being a troublesome car.
Like Quik said and I guess its true about any car, best if its under warranty.

Almost forgot. CV boots. Now in all fairness, front CV boots eventually tear and need replacement on all FWD cards, not just VW's. But still..like torque steer...it's something that isn't an issue at all, with the LS. ;-)

I don't know about reliability, but my friend just bought a new Jetta GLI with the turbo engine and the DSG dual clutch automanual tranny. Leather interior, sport steering wheel with a cutout at the bottom, dual climat control, mp3, 6 CD, heated seats, 17" wheels for $25000, it was a 06 leftover, but new (57 miles).

I have to say that I am impressed with that car's pulling power, quality of interior and handling. I myself hate FWD, but in that car there is almost no noticable torque steering.

The power from that 2.0 turbo is just amazing, that car flies and on the freeway and the passes take only couple of seconds.

The transmission is very good also, quick firm shifts controlled from the steering wheel and the auto mode is smoother than the tranny in LS for sure.

I say go for it, but get GLI, black or grey.

Nice cars but reliability is another thing, hit or miss from what I gather. I thought about getting a Golf GTI vr6 or whatever the top model was. I am happy I stuck w/ getting a Cobalt SS/SC. Stock it was great but after some, ok, alot of modifying its awesome. I now have more options than the LS or a GTI and having just over 300HP and still covered on the 7 year warranty I got is a nice mindset. Really happy w/ the purchase and the extra goodies added. My parents hated I traded the LS for this cheap thing when I showed up and show 'em but now they like the car, they love my seats(heated/cooled w/ massage). They changed their mind pretty quick about my choice but again, I made it the way it is.

Anyway, go w/ what you want though man. Just remember, VW are not cheap to fix, not saying you well having problems but my g/f worked on a few and her teacher who loves Audi's and VW's even admits they are not the best in the breaking down apartment. I think he has like 9 altogether(different models of course).
