SCT or Xcal tune

Can I buy a tune from a previous oner of any of these tunes? I am worried about buying a tune from a previous owner. One owner says that they put the factory tune back on the Xcal bought from Dennis Reinhart. The SCT was originally bought from Blue Oval Chips. The owner of SCT provided his PCM code. Are these tuners PCM code specific? If they put their factory tunes back on their cars, can it then be put on another Mark?

Yes, if they put back the factory tune you can take the reinhart tune. You just have to trust that it is what he says it is.

Each tune is custom written for your vehicle. So even two tunes for a 98 Mark VIII by Reinhart can be very different.

Simple, Dennis does the Reinhart tunes and Lonnie does the Blue Oval Chip tunes.

Seriously, both are derived from their personal experience with the line of cars that they have tuned over the years. Each one is customized to the mods of the car and the personal tastes of the owner and tuner.

So is it possible that when I buy someone elses tune, I may not get the tune I am looking for? They have to put some sort of basic upgrade tune. Right?

It is possible to not get the tune that you are looking for. But its also possible to get a great tune for a stock setup. Just ask the guy your looking at buying it from what the tune was for and if he had it adjusted for any mods or if its for a stock engine. If you can get it cheap enough then you can send it back in to have it reburned for what you need.

I would take your car to a good shop and have it dyno and road tuned for the costs involved because each car is alittle different. Find a good tuner in your area, as he also is the one who can provide you what ever tune you will eventually want.

As long as the previous owner flashed his car BACK to stock, you can use the tuner provided it is tuned for the same PCM catchcode and modification options. If he did not flash it back to stock, the tuner will be vin locked to his PCM. To use it, you would also have to swap PCMs with him or pay an additional fee to any tuner and have it unlocked, and re-tuned.

I don't think the cost of a dyno tune is worth it on a basic bolt on Mark VIII... a regular SCT tune from Reinhart or Torrie or Lonnie will do you well. Personally, I'm selling my SCT chip and moving on to Sniper Tuning so I can tune both my 98 and 96 Mark VIII's.
