Hello everyone. I figured I'd give you a little background on how I got my car. If you're not big on reading, you can just look at the pictures (both my old and new car).

Until very recently I had a 2004 Mercedes-Benz CL55 AMG that I bought in 2009:

I drove it up to New Hampshire from Virginia on new years eve to visit my family. Within 15 minutes of being parked it was hit by a Durango. I didn't know about this when I saw the slip of paper under the windshield wiper the next morning.

At first I was angry, thinking I had gotten a parking ticket when the meters are supposed to be free at night. After I read the slip, I wished it had been a parking ticket. I looked at the driver's side rear and saw this:

I said a few choice words but thought, "at least the car's still driveable."

Then I looked at the passenger's side and saw this:

The Durango pushed the car into the curb, damaging the rear tire and suspension. From the angle of the trunk lid, I could tell the frame was also bent pretty badly. The estimate was well over $20,000, so the car was totalled.

I wasn't really sure what I wanted for my next car. I wanted something nice, but I didn't want to spend a lot of money. I've always had a thing for Mark VIII's, but those are getting to the age where it takes a lot of searching to find one in good condition, and I didn't have a lot of time to drive long distances in my search. I started looking at LS's, and I found one close that had was in good shape, one owner, dealer maintained, with all of the options (nav/THX audio, HID's).

So far I'm loving the LS. It's a very interesting color that looks either dark brown or grey depending on the light with a dark brown and light beige interior (Chargoal Gray Clearcoat Metallic and Espresso/Medium Light Stone maybe?). It doesn't have quite as much power as the CL55 (493 HP/517 ft-lb supercharged V8), but it's still pretty quick. I drove it back from the dealer this afternoon (about 50 mi of highway driving) and it was nice and smooth. I can't comment on the handling yet. I haven't had much chance to take it out on a good winding road, and the roads were covered with melting snow when I did my test drive so I wasn't going to fling it around too hard.

The LS actually cost less than what I put into maintaining the CL55 just months before my trip. There was nothing catastrophically wrong with the CL, it was all just routine maintenance, wear and tear items, and new tires. That was pretty much normal every year. I'd go in for my routine service about once every year (includng rear tires). Two weeks and several thousand dollars later, I'd get my car back with all of the little problems fixed. It was an amazing car outside of those two weeks.

About my name: My CL55's first owner was an actor, and the car had a star on the grill and a lot of power. Coincidentally, my LS also has a star on the grille and a good amount of power, so the name still fits.

It's interesting too see you posting here. I saw your post about the accident on mbworld couple of months ago. Sucks!

I am an 04 CL55 owner as well and i do own an LS too.

You will for sure miss the CL, a lot! The LS is a very cool car but it is nowhere near the CL. I have had my LS for almost 9 years and i love it. I already have over 211000 miles on it. My CL i have had for almost 4 years now and it has over 103000miles.

If you get an LS you should most likely get an 06 model since it has the best stuff on it.

Good luck!

The CL55 is definitely more car, no questions about that. The repair/maintenance bill proves it alone! :)

For an affordable luxury daily driver that looks good and drives good I think the LS is one hell of a bang for the buck. Worse case scenario you buy one outright and drive it until you find the next CL55 of your dreams. Plus if you like the LS enough there are some pretty reasonable mods you can do to help with performance and handling.

It will, unfortunately, never replace the CL55 in terms of performance IMHO. It would just need too much work done to it. But for $2K or less you can certainly improve it. SS Brake lines, brake upgrade, lowering springs, better rubber, CAI, and a tune will go a long way. After that the options are less bolt-on friendly and more of a project.

They're both beautiful cars... sorry to hear about the MB, Enjoy the LS, and let us know if you have any questions.... After you search a bit ;) . Cars come and go. Makes life fun trying a bit of everything!!!

Aww jeez sad to see a nice AMG like that murdered in its prime but congrats on the LS. The grey color is really neat. You should be pleasantly surprised by the competence of the LS in the handling department. A few days after I got mine I took a road trip up to San Jose and passed through several mountain passes. I'm not going to say it was a good idea but the LS handled those roads at 100 frightfully well.

You may want to get a few preventative maintenance things done on the LS while you're motivated. Defects in the design of the vehicle that are best caught and repaired early:

-Oil in the spark plug wells - Needs new valve cover gaskets(if your car is an '03 V8 with under 100k mi you can possibly get this done free under extended warranty)
-The above issue contributes to the most common complaint in these cars: misfires due to failing Coil on Plugs. In the even this happens pull the coils out and see if there is oil in any of the spark plug boots. If there is, replace valve cover gaskets, if not replace malfunctioning coils, or the whole set with Visteon brand which is OE.
-Cooling system cracks. The Lincoln LS uses a pressurized cooling system and plastic components; not its proudest feature. The typical weakpoints of the cooling system are: Thermostat housing, coolant outlet pipe, upper radiator hose and degas bottle. These are all pretty inexpensive things to replace so if you're planning on getting the cooling system flushed you should really get these replaced at the same time.
-Tranny issues tend to arise from Ford using a poorly made Mercon V trans flud from factory which ruins their solenoid packs. If it hasnt been done already and still ahs the factory Mercon V get the transmission flushed and refilled with Motorcraft Mercon V and if you notice any issues with lag while shifting to reverse you may want to look into purchasing a replacement solenoid pack for your trans.

All in all you will be pleasantly surprised by how cheap maintenance and replacement parts for this car will be compared to the Benz, even more so if you go through Max at Five Star Ford(lol more stars) in the ad to the right as opposed to the dealer.

Also get to work on that engine swap. We know you're a mad scientist that intends to drop that Benz lump in the LS. :shifty:

The people who hit the Benz left a note? That's pretty cool. I almost got the same color LS but it was gone when I got there and the one I have now was there.

Welcome!

Best of luck with the LS. Do you plan on toying with it any?

I'm probably not going to do too much to mod the LS. I'd like to tint it, but VA law limits the front door windows to 50%, which almost seems like a waste of time. I may do it anyway for the UV protection.

So far I'm loving the LS. It's not the absolute beast that the CL55 was, but it's still pretty quick. I'm still discovering things about the car. When I looked through the manuals, I found the previous owner kept the original window sticker. I also found a letter from Ford extending the warranty on the coil packs. I'll definitely look into the Motorcraft Mercon V (according to the service records it's already had a transmission solenoid replaced).

Oh awesome. If they already replaced the solenoid you're probably not due for another fluid change for a good ~50k-100k or so after that. What's the year/mileage on the car?

It's a 2003 with ~73,000 mi.

I also saw the little logo on the glass today for the UV resistant glass.
