Reverse to park sucks

OK so I go out to my to move it so one of the delivery trucks can get in since I park it in the back of the store and as I try to shift out of park I have to give it more force than usual.

Then the same as I try to get it back in park. Basically going into reverse and out of reverse in either park or drive felt so hard like I could bust something doing so.


Does this sound like maybe a fluid issue or something worse. No fluids have leaked out in the spot that I park at work and I check often at home and I never saw anything.
 
Solenoid maybe. You can always easily check your trans fluid to make sure it's filled and has the proper color and consistency.

I used to put the car in neutral then park real fast after having it in reverse. Someone told me to do this, I forget the specific reason but it was always easier on the transmission it seemed.
 
No incline and I cant go from park to neutral.

Its a loud clank and I have to use force. It did this here and there once in a while but this time it was pretty rough and it wasn't something consistent in the past. I did it a few times to make sure it wasn't just some sporadic crap like they can pull on us.

A plug under the car is removed and you visually determine it. Unfortunately after all the times I looked I never found the damn thing I just know its there.

Sorry thought there was. Never had to do trans work on mine.

If you do need the trans worked on I wouldn't take it anywhere except a Ford/Lincoln dealer though.
 
Anyone know off hand if Auto Zone rents out ramps?
 
+1 they're what... 20 or 30 bucks? I've had mine since I turned 19. I forget what they cost back then.
 
I could do that. The thing is I can only use them when the management and maintenance leave at around 7:00 which leaves me not much time to use them for other things. I'm sure I would benefit buying them but thats my justification for renting them, I would just have limited use for them.

Renting stuff is the cost of purchasing them so.... I don't know maybe I will just pick a pair up. I cringe at the thought of using a jack if I don't need to remove a wheel:D ...since the incident that is:mad:
 
Then use jackstands. I got a jack and 2 jack stands from pep boys for $30 a few weeks ago.

I used to back my car up on a concrete parking divider thing if I needed some space underneath. Not too safe but I put the parking brake on chocked the wheels.
 
My jack came with stands. I guess I'll just get the ramps, they make things way easier.

I mean besides the jack being on wheels whats the difference between that and stands. I feel way more safe with the ramps.
 
Harder to drive off of jack stands while getting the car in the air. And yes, I've driven past/over ramps before.
 
Yes but if it slips on me like that jack did then I'm :q:q:q:qed.

Id rather be in the car rather than under it if a incident occurs.
 
If a jack stand slips while the car is in the air, either don't shake the car or don't accidentally hit the jack stand. Never had a problem with jack stands.
 
Thats the thing, I am just being paranoid but I didn't think the jack had any reason for slipping either.


I just wanna play it safe, they have a purpose or every one would just use stands.
 
You are not supposed to have a car lifted with a jack for extended periods. It is not meant for that.

I know people who have kept Jeeps on just four jack stands with no wheels for years at a time. A jack is meant to just lift the car, jack stands are meant to keep it there. If I was doing anything other than changing wheels, I would use jackstands under it rather than keep it on the floor jack.
 
Yes you are correct but you cant tell me you yourself and the majority of people out there never used a jack to jack the car up and work on it while the jack is under it.


If I am doing a job where the wheels can stay on the car I would use a ramp and I know Im not the only one. I recall a good amount of people in my thread about my jack slipping claiming they would rather use ramps as well.

You should NEVER leave a car up on just a jack itself. The seals in the jack are not made to support that much weight for a long period of time and thats why they make jack stands. I have been using jack stands for over 10 years and never had one of them slip off or anything of that nature. If you place the jack in the factory provided jack point then there should be no way that the car could fall off. I prefer jack stands over ramps because I have seen too many people drive straight off ramps, but different strokes for different folks
 
only 1 problem with ramps (quoted from provided link above)

Drive vehicle until transmission is at operating temperature. Raise vehicle on hoist. Make SURE it is level."
explorers have the same stupid plug, and the way it works is the plug screws up into a small tube (like a 1/4 inch) in the bottom of the pan and the fluid level should be at the top of the tube (with the trans fluid temp exactly correct,100 degrees i think) and the fluid should trickle out. if the temp is wrong the fluid level will be up or down depending on fluid temp, so ramps only if you still jack up the rear also
 
Ahh thanks chicken someone with a point but if it needs to be level then all four would need stands also.

I have a reason for wanting to use jack stands till I read that post but people just dont get it.

Slick LS read my post about the jack slipping and you would see how many people almost came across the same problem I did no thanks to the rail bending ( the factory jack point!! ).

Like I said I would rather be above the car than under it if something would go wrong. I could use ramps up front and jack stands in the rear.

All I am is paranoid since the fact I almost had a hand taken off the last time I had my car up.
