Well guys, its summer, I have a job, and my car needs work. Things are looking good for the Mark right now.

The Plan: All I want to do right now is rust removal. And I mean, ALL of the rust. The underside of my car looks like any northern Illinois car, its pretty well rusted over, but it appears to be mostly on the surface. There is some rust that went through the side of the car, on the driver and passanger side near the wheels. I would like to get that rust cut out and replaced with metal and not mud, and I'd also like to get the underside fully cleaned up. I was thinking of going with some kind of truck-bed liner on the underside to hopefully prevent the rust once and for all?

So, do any of you have any suggestions to my plan? And most importantly, does anyone know a honest, quality shop that treats people fairly in the Chicagoland area?

Thanks in advance,

Luka

I dont know any shops but I want to add a few things.

The Mark VIII should never rust like you described unless it was in a flood. The body is galvanized and double-dip primed. For a short while I have a Mark with 235k on it. It was always a Wisconsin car, the underside looked good but had some rust in the rocker panels. You may want to check closer for interior side rust.

Be carefully with undercoating. Like painting, its all in the prep. If not done right, the material can separate just enough to let in and then hold moisture in. This doubles the rusting action.

Its nothing abnormal with the underside rust. look under any 13 year old, 150k mile car in the Chicagoland area -- thats what my car looks like.

As far as getting the prep and paint done right... thats why I asked for an honest, quality shop to take my car to.

Honest + Quality = Good work? I hope so.

I have looked! At my 96, my short-lived 95 :) Keep in mind, I live THREE hours north of Chicago, I know all about that darn rust! My 73 was rust on wheels on the underside :(

Chicago has tons of shops are you know.... Here is one I saw good work done at...

Cosmetic Auto Trim & Glass Inc.

Thanks for the contact info!

Does anyone else have comments about my idea to remove rust? Does anyone have first hand experience with any body shops around here?

I will be dropping my front subframe and pulling the motor in mine and repainting everything with por 15. I have used it once and would not hesitate to use it on anything where corrosion is an issue.
