My shifter digits aren't illuminating anymore. Is there any trick to replacing the bulb? I am guessing I will have to yank the center console....

Searched the forum but didn't see much on the lamp...

You have to pull apart the center console. Its fairly easy.

Pull out the vents in the back. Now take off the piece around the ashtray. Just pop off the center console, and walla. The bulb is some crazy number fbird said, I got one from him for free :D It looked like a 191 or 192.

...have the same problem....stopped at ford to get a part number on the stupid buld..and they said there are two bulbs in the console shifter [which makes sense actually - since each letter ie equally bright]... the bulbs are in my garage [ill check the part # - 191 sounds familiar]...

but anybody have any ides how they would both go out at the same time?..and apparently these things are a pain-in-the ass to get to.... when i get the motivation to dive into it ill let ya know

i just had this problem in my gen 2 theirs 2 lights, one under the + and - for sst mode aqnd one under the p,n,r etc. but just take out the center piece that goes all the way around the shifter than the little square covering the still covers the lights, they look difficult but once you do it they really are a breeze to take off. and i just went to my local advanced auto parts and got some from there, i cant remember the number but we just matched em eye to eye from some off the rack and they worked fine. but if you really want the ford parts number i have that also. and if you have big fingers they will be a pain in the a** to get out. i lost one of the bulbs when i first took them out cause it flew out my hand. your best bet is to get a pair of tweezers, and gentle grasp em and wiggle it in and back and forth motion pulling up and theyll pop right out. take your time with the trim pieces and bulbs and its super easy.

Not to bring up an old thread, but I have a gen II and I'm gonna tackle the light tomorrow. The (+) and (-) on the sst is illuminated but the P,R,D, etc. are not. Before I go screwing around, could you (or anyone) please explain what you mean when you talk about the 'little square' and such. Do I have to rip out the ashtray and stuff or can I get at the lights just by removing the "stuff" around the shifter. Thanks.

The whole console has to come out.

All things considered though, its really easy. I could do it from start to finish in 10 minutes.
