removing the resonators

im gettign some brake work done at midas i think cheapest price so far. and they said theyll remove the resonators for me for 50 bucks and replace with aluminum tubing. they say itll sound better, but would have to replace in 3 years cause they do rust (not stainless steel). has anyone done this? will it sound good? add hp? better or worst gas? let me know what you think. i was trying to do something for now to make it sound better. and something cheap

yes - it will sound better since the resonators are designed to quite the system down. a little more hp since it will flow a tad better.

I put a magnaflow x-pipe in their place.
 
You will get a weird humming sound inside the car when driving on highway speeds... It will sound a bit louder, probably won't effect EPA or HP because they are not very restrictive. Try to talk them down to $30 bc all they are going to do is saw them off and put cheap pipes in their place.

is it the same thing as an h pipe he doesnt know what an x pipe is. he says te car has an h pipe on it already in the back.
 
what size x pipe and what all should i tell these guys to do. like take the resonators off and just put an x pipe on.
 
y quieter i thought it would make it louder. would removing the resonators and putting 2 straight pipes in its place
 
If you read the link quik posted...

"As a general rule, H pipes allow for more low-end torque and slightly less Horse Power than X pipes do. Also, the sound note is quite different. The X pipe has a raspy sound while the H pipe is more “muscle car” sounding. "

if its aluminum they cant weld it to your existing pipes. and aluminum doesnt rust.
 
The pipe isn't aluminum, it's aluminized. I don't know the actual process behind the manufacturing, but it's steel and will rust. Perhaps it has an aluminum coating.

In any event, aluminized pipe should last the life of the car. Oh, wait, he lives in the rustbelt. :)

I'm quite sure he means aluiminized in which case it will rust and can be welded to the stock exhaust.
 
Hey guys you cannot weld aluminized pipe to actual aluminum pipe. But I am sure the X pipe is aluminized and not aluminum. Aluminum exhaust is not a smart chosse no matter where you live.

its aluminized for sure...and it will last for much longer than 3 years (even in the midwest) if you keep it clean...just put some paint over the welds

in order for an x pipe to really be effective it needs to be as close to the exhaust headers as possible
