hi all. I've decided to get a 2000 lincoln ls v8 sport. I've heard of members swapping in sst shifters in non-sport models to use sst mode as a bolt in. i'm wondering if I can swap the basic (D4,3,2,1) shifter assembly in a sport model to utilize 1st gear whenever? I've only heard of people converting to sst, but not the other way around.... btw thanks for having me ^_^

I'm a little confused. You can use first with SST too. What are you expecting to get with the base shifter that you can't with the SST one?
The 1st gen (2000-2002) does not like to go down to first without you stomping on the gas pedal anyway. I think that you'd also have to reflash the PCM for the non-sport shifter to work correctly.

I think you have to use d5 or smash the gas past 60% throttle to kick down to first. I just want more control over the cars gear selection. I would like to be able to come to a stop, shift the car to 1 and take off in first gear. I just don't want to have to pass the sport model up over something so simple

This has been discussed many times.....

In either shifter, D4 and D5 will run through all the gears. In SST mode the car will start in second unless <60% throttle is applied. With the base shifter what ever gear you select up to 3rd is the ONLY gear available (there is NO 4th or 5th available). That is, if you select 3rd the car will start and stay in 3rd until the engine hits redline. Being able to start in 1st is offset by the inability to hold 4th or 5th.

To recap a little, D4 and D5 are totally automatic modes. D4 is 1-4 and D5 is 1-5.

right. I'm going to buy my ls in October. I'll look for a place that's able to flash the pcm. if not I'll look for a premium (sport suspension and non-sst shifter). worst case ill get a sport with sst. thanks for the help

If you really want to start in 1st, get a 2nd gen LS. More horse power anyway...

i want a first gen because I dont like things being "fly by wire" in the second gen. also the 2nd gen has an electronic parking brake, which i cant use to hoon around with

Wait. Can't you use the tuner to set it to allow starting in first and not bother with the shifter change?
O_O had no idea that was possible now. searched the forums and i thought nobody could find the value to alter for that and it was hit or miss on certain PCM's. so how does that work? just email torrie?

Any dealer can "flash the PCM". Getting one that is willing to change the factory program is the trick. Most techs don't know how to do this. I could tell you, but if they're unwilling to do this the point is moot.

Finding a Premium Sport will probably prove a bit difficult; there weren't that many made. Don't let the 2nd gen electronic devices scare you away. You will find the cooled seats invaluable in SoCal!
