Removal/Install of center vent?

I saw a few posts in the radio installation section, but it just says to remove with tool along the sides. Can I just take a knife and slowly pry along the sides to get it out? Just want to make sure I do this right as the last guy looks like he had no clue..

theres a clip on each side in the vent, you gotta use something flat to push in and pull it out.

mine was broken after an audio installer destroyed one of the clips on the side.
i ended up using epoxy and scrap plastic to make my own... clips and holds in well.
dont be afraid to use a little ingenuity if something snaps off or breaks, because like you said those oem replacements are expensive
 
1. Pry carefully on the sides of the center vents above the stock head unit with a flathead screwdriver:

Vents will slide straight out like so:

2. remove ashtray and surround:

3. Remove the four bolts holding the head unit/climate control bracket in place. IIRC, it was an 8mm socket:
