I'm not being very successful with getting the nut in the truck loose without the entire thing spinning and negating my efforts. There was also this weird sensor thing attached to the top; I read Ford had these only in the '93 and early '94s before giving up on the idea, if I'm talking about the right thing

Have any tips to getting the shock out besides having an impact gun?

That thing is a solenoid, it adjust ride firmness for braking or so that's what it's suppose to do. I removed mine and went with after market rear shocks. Better and cheaper
I think my nut's were a little hard to get off, just keep working with it, the'll come loose!

Would it help to do it with the car on the ground?

i don't remember having any issues removing my shocks.. weird.

When I searched, no one ever seems to have a problem either. When I try to remove the nut the whole shock just spins, so I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Have a helper hold the top portion of the body of the shock and use an impact..

Iirc, all I did was put a Vice grip on the shaft inside the wheel well directly below the mount. It will spin a couple times till the vice grip wedges against the wheel well wall.
