My rear mirror tint does not work and is half way full of the tinted fluid that I assume makes the mirror darker to reduce headlight glare, and my auto wipers also do not work. I was looking around and I noticed that the black box located on the windshield behind the mirror was not attached on the right side mounting. It looks as though it was either jarred loose or somehow became unattached from the windshield. I am wondering if these two problems are related to the black box and if they are possibly both something that would be fixed if the box was remounted properly. Does anyone have any information that might help me remount the box or would a glass shop or a dealership need to look at the problem? :L

hmmm...i dont know how to fix it, but i do know that the black box is for the rain sensor...

theres a lot of cars that have the button on the rearview mirror to reduce glare, but i dont know that the black box has anything to do with that. maybe it does.... my dads car has that button to reduce glare+, but his rearview mirror doesnt have a big box in front of it like the ls does...

wait a few days, someone else may be able to help you.
you can try calling the dealership & just ask to talk to a service tech & ask them if the dimmer has anything to do with that black box...

good luck & let us know when you do get it fixed. :)

The mirror is indepent of the wipers. The wipers are controlled by the black box and the mirror is self contained. I needed a new mirror after having the windshield replaced. Bought it for $90 from Ford Parts Network.

the mirror is a common failure - seems after a couple of years the fluid fails and it won't tint any more.

I have an 02, I dont see any difference when I turn the autodimmer on or off, can my limo dark tint have to do anything with this?

probably - use a flashlight to see if it's working. with your tint (like mine) it my not matter if it isn't

Interesting... neither of mine work as well. I'm wondering if there is a wiring problem. Every so often when I start my car, the auto wipers will engage, but that's it. As soon as I get my books I'll start poking around with the meter...

FYI, I did some checking and I found that there is a regular half-silvered day/night mirror available from Ford for our cars. It costs a fraction of the electrochromatic one and is much less likely to break in the future.

Did you replace the mirror yourself?

Was it straightforward? Any tricks to R&R the mirror?

For Dutch: regarding the regular mirror

Do you remember the part number for this regular mirror and does it mount the same way as the current one or does it require the button glued to the windshield?

Mine doesnt work as well, One day went into the car and the fluid had leaked out all over every thing and stains whatever it touches.
Now all I see is one bubble that moves around depending on the temp in the cab.

I am now ordering one with a Compass and autodim, Although with heavy tint I dont think it will dim because the Photo Eye will not sence the rear cars lights.

Just keep an eye on it to see if it is going to leak....

I saw it at FordParts.com. They do not have a part number listed, but here's the info:

Day and night 00-05 $24.45 $0.00 $17.82
Windshield - Glass - mirror inside - Day and night

Day and night 00-05 $108.65 $0.00 $79.21
Windshield - Glass - mirror inside - Electrochromic w/o compass

The higher price is the list price, lower price is fordparts.com's price.
