So I went and got my oil changed today and the informed me that I have "heavy oil leaka all over" and a rear differential leak. My question is how expensive is this to fix generally .
I'm not sure where It's leaking from. Could I do it my self? Sorry fo
r the lack of info.

My 2 guesses are either the oil pan gasket(rusty?) or oil filter adapter gasket. Iirc the adapter gasket usually runs around 300 and the pan is upwards of 5-700 at shops. If either of those are even the cause.

I've only changed the rear fluid but just from looking at it it's def easier to fix that then the above 2.

The rear diff usually leaks from 3 places. The covergasket, the front seal, or the 2 half shaft seals. Well, that adds up to 4. The cover is not to hard, but a shop may charge you 300. The front and side seals are a bit more involved.

Concerning the oil leak, wipe everything down and let her leak away again.

If it is wet around the oil pan, it is the oil pan gasket. If it originates from the oil filter area, it is likely the adapter gasket. If it is wet where the transmission bell-housing meets up with the engine at the rear of the oil pan, it is the rear main oil seal which is behind the flexplate.

Thank you for all your help. Come next monday im going to get it checked with a mechanic friendd of mine.

I also have a 94. Just replaced oil filter housing gasket...$4.50 Rock Auto, DIY (dumped a quart real quick)...sat for 4 years before I got around to fixing it. Take your time and look around, it will come to you, and be cheap to fix!! They wanted $450.00 to fix it!! Glad I came to LVC!!

In an effort not to make duplicate threads and use the search tool properly, I'm reviving this thread.

Would a good way to check for a leak be to spray everything down with a degreaser / brake clean and a rag then see where the leak originates?

I fear that the rear main seal is bad, but I'm really hoping it's not. Pretty sad that the previous owner said it was bad then said it was the oil filter adapter gasket...

My bet is either the oil filter adapter gasket or the oil pan gasket. I've had both. Unlikely it's the rear main.

Supposedly the adapter gasket was replaced, so sounds like the oil pan gasket. Does the motor have to be pulled to change it?

If I do that, I might upgrade the pan. Are there options for me?

Supposedly is not good enough. Check it again. People make mistakes or you could have gotten a bad gasket.

The crossmember needs to be removed to get to the pan. No motor pull necessary.
