Here there and everywhere
So on my way home my radiator cracked, can I use one out of a t-bird or cougar with the 4.6? If so I can get a new one off ebay for 79 shipped, or one from a junkyard for 35. Help, I want my car back again!

Okay, but the one for $35 is also out of a 95 cougar. Would that work or just get the mark viii radiator they have it's only $10 or so more. I'm trying to be cheap I still need four tires.

I'm not sure if the Cougar radiator will work or not but have $10 in one pocket and $35 in another and tell them that's all the cash you have. Make it sound like you heard them wrong and thought the Cougar was $45 and the Mark VIII was $35 and that's all the money you brought or have. They'll either make the sale or you can walk out and then come back in and act like you found $10 more dollars.

Or you can buy a brand new radiator for $70 at oreillys with a lifetime warranty

That's because you're asking the wrong person to get it for you...

It realy would not kill any of you...go out..make a friend in the buisiness

I'm always using my commercial discount to get people parts...
Normally I charge a small fee tho..

There are 2 prices for almost every part at any parts house.
Cost (commercial discount rate)
List (what they charge Joe Snuffy that just walks in the door every other month for a part)

the average "buddy rate" is Cost + 1/2 the difference of List

Coming from someone on the other side of the commercial parts counter (well, I was last year anyway,) that's (still) not how commercial pricing works.

That's IF you can find somebody in one of these parts stores you can get along with. Around here all that works in any one of the stores are retards, always get the wrong part, take it back and still get the wrong part!:shifty: Hell they don't even know who makes a 69 Ranchero! I had to go out of my way to get the right part for it, and to fins somebody who knew Ford made it!:Bang

$40 at the junkyard, but got a 30 warranty so if it leaks I can get a replacement. I asked if he could find out if the cougar/t-birds used the same radiator, he looked it up and said they are interchangeable.

I hope you flushed it out, could have some mouse poop and nests in there. That would be nice to circulate into your block. But they will replace the their $40 radiator and leave you to replace a motor and or transmission. BAD IDEA. Radiator Barn can have a new one to you in 24 hrs for about a $100. Don't look for trouble and get a new replacement.

Commercial discounts will vary by the volume of business the account does with the particular parts store. That's how places like Rock Auto can offer us a "group price", by creating a commercial entity for the Mark Vlll group or who ever they want.

Yes, I flushed it out. Nothing nasty came out.:D As for mouse poo that was in a speaker box I bought along with the mouse that poo'ed it out, it was dead but $12 for 2 10 inch JL audio subs and a bandpass box I cleaned it out nicely! When the time comes I'll get a new one, hopefully a griffen or something like that.

Oh really!? Wanna elaborate?

Sure. The info I'm posting is from my experience with Autozone's commercial sales division. It does not exactly transfer over to other parts stores, but they all operate this way - it's just a matter of to what extent. (Of course there are stores like Parts Plus or Factory Motor Parts that only deal with commercial accounts, so not all of this applies to them.)

There are many prices for a single part at any parts store with a commercial division. From high to low, there's list, DIY, tiered, and cost.

List is a number that corporate pulls out of their ass. Nobody is actually charged the list price. List is designed to allow the shop to charge the customer "list price" for parts, allowing the shop to pocket the difference - and to make the shop feel all warm and fuzzy thinking they're getting an awesome discount. At Autozone, list price is almost always exactly twice tier 5 pricing.

DIY also known as Walk-In price is the price for Joe Snuffy that just walks in the door every other month for a part. It is usually significantly lower than list, but higher than most tiered pricing.

Tiered pricing is the pricing structure for commercial accounts, which varies based on sales over time. If shop A averages $50 a week of sales with the parts store, they only qualify for tier 1. Shop B at $500 a week qualifies for tier 3, and shop C at $2000/wk qualifies for tier 5. Tiered pricing is a discount to DIY, and the discount varies based on the markup (from cost to DIY price) of the item.

Cost is simply what it cost the parts house to purchase the part from their suppliers (Johnson Controls, Honeywell, Valeo, etc.)

So to put it all together, from the bottom up. For a low markup item, one that the parts store does not make that much profit on, like a cheap stock replacement air filter, for example:
Cost.....$6.73
Tier 5...$8.99
Tier 3...$9.49
Tier 1...$9.99
DIY......$9.99
List.....$17.98

And another example of a high markup item, where the parts store really makes their money, like a 65 series battery:
Cost....$28.73
Tier 5..$71.99(20% off DIY)
Tier 3..$80.99(10% off DIY)
Tier 1..$85.49(5% off DIY)
DIY.....$89.99
List....$143.98

On items that are very low markup, there is NO discount for commercial accounts, they pay the same as a walk in customer would pay. The only benefit is that the shop still gets free delivery.

I realize this is an older thread but I just wanted to clarify for anyone that uses this tread in the future that these are in fact interchangeable. Any 4.6 thunderbird/cougar/mark VIII all use the same radiator throughout all years. 3.8/5.0 thunderbirds/cougars use different radiators.

Yeah, so far mine ebay one is holding up nicely, it was for a 4.6 t-bird. Thought I posted what you said earlier in the thread, guess I forgot.
