I was juster wondering if any of you people who live up north know of any additives or any brands or weights of oil that are best suited for cold winter startups. Last year i switches to 5w30, currently i have 10w30 and i started it this morning and it sounded like a 8-71 super charged big block (not really but the whine was close lol) i dont know if the water pump was whining or if it was the timing chain. I heard amsoil makes good products for winter but im wondering if theres anything else out there since amsoil is hard to find and pricey.

im also wondering...

what happens if you mix half conventional oil and half synthetic? is it bad? the synthetic bonds to the engine parts a little better, but i dont want it to all leak out.

any information is great.

full synthetic is better in the cold. 5w20 should be ample, maybe a 0w20 for really cold starts? your oil shouldnt leak out- how many miles do you have and have you always run non-synthetic?
if you're really worried, i think some of these cars came with block warmers...

I have about 118,000 miles. underside is a little wet around the pan gasket. so i dont want to run full synthetic because it goes through leaks alot easier.

i might try some 5w20, i just want something that flows a little better so it will get to the timing chain quicker if thats what is making the whine. its kind of weird and almost makes me uneasy, after a long drive sometimes ill come to a light and the oil light will come on. so i dont know if 5w20 will make my oil pressure worse, or if its just a faulty sensor, it happens about once every 2 or 3 months.

Motorcraft 5w20 is a synthetic blend. That is what is recommended for these cars. It also help to have a good quality oil filter. Of the less expensive brands Purolator is your best best but a K&N or WIX filter would be better still.

The whine you hear on a cold start is probably your power steering pump. Ford pumps are notorious for noise.

there was a thread on oil/filters a short while back. It got me to pull up the manufacturer's specs and the purolator was actually a little better than the wix. I'd show links but i'm lazy :p the important thing is to not use a fram!;)

aye aye... 5w20 and probably a napa gold is whats gonna go on/in her. hmmm KINKY!

What's wrong with Fram? I used a purolator on my last change cause it was on sale. I've used fram on my other cars in the past.

CURRENT Fram filters? Absolutely nothing is wrong with them. they filter just fine.
