Has any one pulled the cylinder heads in the vehicle? and how much of a PITA is it? I rebuilt the engine about 5K ago but had the facility to pull the motor now I will be working in my garage. I need to drop the cross member also so I can pull the pan, need to upgrade to some H beams and KB pistons before I get going on the remote turbo install.

Well if you have to drop the k-member, I would say just pull the whole thing out. Much easier I would think.

Definatley, just drop the K member and do it once you get it all out on the ground....

Done it several times in the car. Its a PAIN. You will most likly need the help of a friend when its time to place the heads. I found the head to be heavy with the manifold still attached. Head bolts need to be in the head b4 you set it on top of block. Use zip ties or rubber bands to hold them. Some will not fit in after. Yes it would be easier out of the car. With out a car lift I'm not sure how you would raise the car high enough. Good Luck

Bah.. you should try to lift a head off a 6.9/7.3 international navstar motor...

And we dropped the K member without a lift..

used a ceiling joist in the garage and a chain block to lift the car up off the Kmember.

less than 1 hour you can have the engine sitting next to the car..

I hear ya. Does the rear bumper hit when you lift the front that high. The man was asking how hard it was to do in the car. All he gets back is no drop the K member. Why not tell him what would be involved. I guess you havn't done it. But you still respond

The car can come up high enough to slide the engine out without touching the rear bumper... but definitely be aware of it...

I'm fairly familiar with how it's done.
Jeff did his car, motor and trans swap.. then he did my car.. motor and trans swap.

total 4 marks were involved by the time we got both motor and trans swaps completed.

The thread above has pictures too.

Now.. as for taking the heads off while the motor is in the car.
I did do the brake booster with the motor in the car, and that experience told me instantly.. ANYTIME you do something like that.. drop the K member

it's literally something stupid
8 k member bolts
2 spindle bolts
fuel line
1 large electrical connection
ac lines..

it may be "possible" to take the head off while the motor is in the car, but I guarantee you it's easier and quicker and less PITA and less cuts and bruises and broken :q:q:q:q if you do it the right way.

Feel free to swim upstream if you like.
Feel free to do it the hard way and prove me wrong.. matters not to me.

my advice is good, take it..leave it.
*shruggs*

Alright your The "man" then!!!! Yes its easier out of the car. Anybody thats opened the hood of a mark 8 would know that. Its no fun but can be done if he doesn't have the means to lift the car.

right way, wrong way... it's fairly simple
be succesful, do it the right way.

do it the wrong way and be prepared to replace alot of crap that you didn't even know existed, nor what they are even called.

Like me! I top dropped an engine with trans. that is I dropped it in from the top. All these years I thought people were just joking about the flux capacitor! :)

Actually I took out brake lines, main harness, etc. Nothing that was hard to replace, just wish I have planned the install and removal better. Granted, this was an entire engine...

+1!!

I can see the post now.

WHAT IS THIS THING CALLED?
the picture shows some little crushed black box that all the blue smoke has been released from.

that's right, you ruptured the flux capacitor and now you aint got no Jigawatts

Pulled my motor out the top also, not to bad. Radiator can even stay in the car. Your pics of the swap are pretty good. Thats a good project and more "S" removed than I would like. Your NO HEMAN either. lol

I've pulled three motors out by dropping the k frame... it really isn't that hard at all, just have to get a hoist.

Open the hood and look at how much room between the unibody and the head there is, maybe 1-2 inches?

Good luck getting the head out...

Thanks for every ones point of view on this. Yes doing it in the car is a PITA I have already stripped down the engine and dropped the front cross member, I have not pulled the heads yet. I have head studs installed that are proving to be another big PITA.
My whole point in asking was if it was possible and what problems people have encountered. I have pulled them out and dropped them out both have a plus side and a negative, but I cant raise the car and cant use a host or picker in my garage and really didnt want to trailer the car to a garage and back.

Yep, the studs are a big problem, I have enough threads at the top to grab with a ground down nut and so far have the drivers side head ready to come off.
