On the tech threads it always says- I relieved the air pressure by removing the solenoid-. I am at the stage where I am trying to either release the air line or remove the solenoid. Yet, I cannot get them to budge. Is the brass fitting on the end of the air line supposed to come out of the bag? Or does it get left behind while pulling on the hose? If I put 12v to the solenoid will it relieve the pressure with the air-ride switch off? I am paralyzed by doubt because I am not familiar with air suspension. My instinct says cut the GD line- relieve the pressure- then splice a repair. Please give any and all advice. I am working on the front- the backs are good. Thanks Dave
 
Releasing of air line from solenoid is very easy: just pull the orange ring out of the solenoid for 1-1,5 millimeters and then pull the air line out. There is a rubber ring holdiong it, to release the holding force you need to pry that orange thind a little out of solenoid as I described.
Then, if you don't want to remove the solenoid, apply 12V to it - it will vent (it can take a lot of time - don't overheat the solenoid).
 
I have moved the orange washer down the air line 1/2 inch. No release. Can I remove the solenoid to release the air pressure? Just twist left-correct? Thanks for the help. This is going to work, I just have to keep at it. This is a wonderful driving car when the bags are operational.

Woah! Wait a sec mang.

Yes, if you just remove the line it will not vent. You can vent by removing the solenoid and here is how you do it. You must remove the metal locking spring that locks the solenoid in place then just push up a little and turn a quarter turn counter-clockwise to pull it out.
The problem with this is the o-ring is old and will prolly leak. If you have o-rings then I would do that just so you can install fresh seals. Thats what I did on my rears cause I had a bad leak after venting them that way.
If you don't have fresh o-rings then I would just unplug them and apply 12 volts to the terminals and vent that way.

Where does the air vent to when applying 12v to the solenoid? Wouldn't the air line have to be out? Or does the car have a pressure vent at the compressor? Thanks
 
Where does the vented air release from- when the air line is not disconnected? Will the 12v put to the solenoid release the pressure with the hardware hooked up? Am I over complicating this? Should I just get BIGGER pliers and remove the air line and go from there?
 
Yeah, just remove the air line. As Nick had said. Just grab the little plastic orange disc on the bottom of the solenoid and push it upward till its flat against the solenoid and the gently pull the airline out. Very easy. I honestly don't know if there is a need to remove the line though. I have only had to vent the bags twice and once was removing the rear solenoids and that caused me to discover the worn o-ring issue. The second time was when the struts were out and I just applied power to the solenoid.
 
Many thanks to everyone for the advice. I accomplished my task. My dear Mk.VIII is steady at ride height. Tomorrow- if it is still steady, I will attempt to adjust the ride by the sensor method I have seen in tech. Again, thank you for suffering a newbie's teething......
 
glad you got it but for future reference the orange collar goes up not down. and if everything is hooked up, just applying 12v wont release the psi cuz the vent at the compressor is closed on a stock system
 
Well, you can vent when everything is hooked up - by applying 12V to a solenoid AND energising the vent valve on the compressor. I did it at the control module connectors with 2 wires.
 
I am proud to report all systems holding air. It looks like its riding a little too high, but I'll take it. Just got back from pick a part for new visor, door handle and trunk lock insert. If I can figure out the damn radio release (its got to be like my old SHO, right?), I should have some tunes. Thanks for your patience. Now- on to the accessory belt.
