Possible Engine (cylinder) Issues

I just got my car back from my mechanic. I had the valve cover job done about 6 months ago and was still seeing oil burning on the pass. side of the engine and they relplaced that side again and said all of the plugs and boots looked good. I told the mechanic that I had been getting a spike in my temp gauge and to check what the cause could be. He said that the coolant looked a little low and that he suspected that I could have engine issues since he thought that there was water or some other substance in my oil. Is this an acutal cylinder head issue. Please, any help would be appreciated??
 
If you have coolant in your oil it is most likely a head gasket or possibly the head. I would get a second opinion on the "substance" in the oil. Does the oil look milky to you?
 
BTW it's a 2000 V8 w/ 75K. I just got it back last night and haven't even looked at the oil yet. The mechanic said it looked like water. Would the coolant make it look milky?
 
yes - milky - or more foam than usual.

Did the mechanic change the oil? Seems unusual for a mechanic to say he found 'something' in the oil and not take next steps to know what it is....
 
It is hit or miss trying to see coolant on the dip stick. Another way is to change your oil and put your used oil in clear plastic jugs. Let them sit there for a day or so (don't move). If there is water in the oil it will separate from the oil settling on the bottom.

Not to sharp shoot you... But I'm pretty sure the oil will end up on the top, coolent on the bottom. Oil is less dense

Just read that there highlighted wards

If there is water in the oil it will separate from the oil settling on the bottom.
 
The mechanic did not change the oil. He said that they didn't do engine work and to take it to the dealer....thanks for the help.
