I was thinking, one the biggest pain about the coils is the stupid cover. Would it really be that big of an issue if you just put two of the bolts back on, perhaps the easiest two on each side? I would think the cover would still fit fairly tight and shouldnt be an issue. Any thoughts?

That should be okay. I think that some have run without it on at all.
I don't think that it would work for me. It rains here a lot, and sometimes it rains really hard. I suspect that water would get in without the covers on tight. (Yes, the engine does get soaked with the hood closed.)

I left the covers off when I went to Accel Mustang coils three-and-a-half years ago. No problems of any kind!

i ran my first ls gen 1 without them for over a year. Never had a problem with them at all, im sure if you just put 2 bolts it should work ok.

Which Mustang COPs?

Did you use these coils or others? What was the issue price?

$209.88/8 pcs * Model: 140034-8 * Manufactured by: Accel
1997-04 Ford 4.6L/5.4L modular 4 valve direct fire (8-pack). These coils feature advanced bobbin technology, highly specialized silicone magnetic steel cores, along with optimized winding, resistance and turns ratios to delivery 10-15% more energy than the OEM coils. Specialized high temperature epoxy resists shock and vibration, while increasing thermal conductivity. These are direct plug replacement for OEM coils. They feature bodies and/or secondary towers molded in ACCEL yellow and feature brass secondary contacts (except direct fire coil on plug applications).

Accel coils application

If I remember correctly, I used ones for the 3-valve engine. They are not a direct replacement and stick up high enough that using the covers is a non-starter. They plug directly into the existing harness and by pushing the coil to one side slightly after seating it on the plug, it's possible to run a longer screw through the coil mounting point and into one of the adjacent brass inserts in the cam cover. Function is just fine!

When I replaced mine I left the rear bolts off the covers. Now I won't have to bust my knuckles and spend hours on end trying to take them out when it comes time to change them again.

When I checked mine and found oil in the plug wells I left the back two bolts off each cover. Still waiting for a misfire.... grr.. Then it will be off to the dealer for some extended warranty work. Sad that they wont fix the leaky VCG's until it phucs up a coil.

hmm... perhaps time to figure out how to hurry their death.

I left the drivers side bottom bolt off of mine. No sense in spending half an hour trying to get that thing on and off everytime. Although, I did have to buy that tiny box wrench specifically for that job.
