Hi guys! Im nearly done sorting my mark ready for inspection but a new problem has emerged. My park brake works fine most of the time but it has started not releasing. If i stamp the pedal like a maniac or if i leave it for a few mins it will release and work ok for a while then jam again! I sprayed some wd up into the ratchet mechanism but hasnt helped. Any easy fixes? Thanks. Martin.

I've had the same problem, and just stopped using the brake. Fortunately I'm a "flatlander" so that's not much of a problem for me. Might be for you though, if you're further north.

I don't know of the permanent fix for this problem, but I know of the workaround for when the brake is stuck. It may not be pleasant, but it works.

First, get the car in a position where you've got a good bit of empty and inactive road (or parking lot space) in front of you.

Then, put your foot down... on the gas. Get the car rolling a little with the parking brake on as it is. Once it's rolling, start kicking that parking brake and it should come loose pretty easy.

Don't forget to jam your foot onto the brake pedal now, before you end up peeling all over the place!

Good luck, and let me know if you come up with a permanent fix for this!

Thanks for you responses guys. I dont need to use the brake really i just figure it will get picked up on inspection! I dont want the embarassment of it jamming on in the inspection bay! lol. Well, i will try lubricating all the moving parts and if that doesnt work guess i will have a go at taking the whole ratchet mechanism apart. Im suspecting a weak pawl spring or something...
