i was driving my 93 mark8 for about a week and i noticed the temperature would go up and down but never over heat..all of a sudden this week the heat goes and is blowing cold air and the the temperature just shoots all the way up. theres no leaks in the cooling system and i replaced the thermostat and still have the same problem. also the water pump was replaced a few years back. can someone tell me what might be the problem now?

I am having the same problem but mine is a 97. It doesnt matter the speed just as long as I'm pushing the gas and the temp shoot up and if I let go it seems to cool off. I stopped and checked to see if the engine was hot but it isnt. You can touch it and not burn your hand. My antifreeze is also spilling over. Maybe a Engine Coolant Sensor? If so how much is the sensor and how hard is it to change? BTW I havent changed my thermostat or water pump.

lunchmeat yours sounds like a suck thermostat both of you should make sure your fans are turning on

It's not that hard to change one but also not located in the easiest spot to get to. I'm with slowmkviii and I think both of you need thermostats replaced and lunchmeat, I think you have an air bubble in the system and it needs to be burped from the very top on the coolant crossover tube. An air pocket can cause the temp to shoot up at HWY speeds and if it idles and cools off, the fan is working but if the temp does not come down, the fan most likely isn't working. It should be coming on at around the half way mark.

Check the fan relay if the fan is not coming on and if it's good, then it could be the VCRM and in your case lunchmeat, it could be the VLCM

I would say you have a definate air pocket. Having no hot air coming from the heater core is a definate sign. Do not drive the vehicle until you properly burp the coolant system. Otherwise, you will percolate the coolant within the block.

Do you have heat coming from your heater core. If not, then you also have an air pocket and need to properly burp the system. The top of the engine may feel cool, but the coolant inside the block is percolating. This is also why you have changing temp indications. The ECT sensor is calibrated for coolant, not air. Hence the constant change in temp.

How do I burp it? Also its not hwy speeds. Its more like 30-40mph and it get hot after about 5-10min of driving. I havent been driving it but was going to put a thermostat on it in the next couple days. I'm also not getting any heat just cold air.

Water pump is fairly easy to change out. From start to finish, it shouldn't take more than 45 min if it's your first one to do. Just make sure to lube the round seal a little before installing the new one. It goes into what looks like a cylinder.

Normally you'll hear some sort of noise before one goes out.

u change the tstat first. i had a overheating problem found out my pigtail clip connect for the fan broke off on both end......my search begin for a fan and female/male connect whichever it is....
