I was looking at this and think I get the jist of it. My O/D button doesn't work nor does it light up. My car likes to shift into O/D every chance it gets. I'll be going 40mph sometimes and the tranny will shift through all the gears and go into o/d. This is ridiculous for it to be shifting into O/D at 40mph. So does that mean I need to fix this button to stop that or is my tranny on it's way out?

I already had the tranny flushed and added lucas. That fixed some of the harshness and shudder I would feel.

I also had a SCT tune added and have no clue if it shifted into O/D so early before I added the tune.

Also I'm assuming I have some form of tranny mod because she shifts pretty hard into gear. In essence like my wife says "it pins my head against the seat when It shifts". So I'm assuming that is some tranny mod done by the previous owner. It did that before I had the tune, and a little more after.

TC will lock in at 39 mph, which will put you in OD. The hard shifts could be from a broken spring where the 1-2 piston is. I bought the two springs and piston from Ford. Cost was in the $60.00 range. Easy to put in though after pan removal.
 
With the shift kit on my Valve body it shifts firm. If I change the line pressure in the tune then it shifts real hard, I don't like it for normal driving. If your springs aren't broken then it may be a combination of a shift kit and the tune making it really hard at shifts.

while that IS a possible assumption it is very dangerous waters to tread into.

The second gens with trans tuning dont get "really hard shifts".

They do have hard shifts when the 1-2 spring is broken or the piston is jamming in the bore.

you need to verify it has the updated piston and that the spring isn't broken otherwise significant and expensive damage will occur.

I've heard many folks say the same as you.
"this car must have been Jmodded, rebuilt,shift kit" only to see them post about 2-3 months later than they have no 3rd or 4th gear.... or only second gear or.. somehow brokem this transmission that they started driving like it was "modded" because it had a hard shift.

you've been warned...
 
You can change the MPH and Load range that the car shifts into 4th very easily in the tune.

At light throttle you can have near stock shift firmness and scheduling.. or in your case, you can move the 3-4 shift to any MPH you desire.

I agree with KK.. if your car is hitting 4th at 39-40 then you do indeed need a better tune...or a "custom tune" I might say.
 
crap! So how do I find out if it has a missing spring or broken piston? My tranny seal is bad and needs to be replaced. Will it be easy to see if those things are bad when they go to change that? Is it easy to fix those things when they go to change that?

Would getting the J-mod be a replacement for the bad spring if I don't already have a j-mod?

I'm kind of lost on the most cost effective way to do this. If the tranny is bad I'd want to build it to take a decent amount of abuse for a good 100k miles. What would be involved cost wise in such a build?

When they go to change that? You're not doing it? It's simple to fix and all you need is a jack and jack stands. You will see the rest of the tools in the link below.

J-Mod will not replace the broken spring. If I'm not mistaken, someone sells the valve body's already drilled out. Someone will speak up and say something, I'm sure. The link above will most likely get you fixed up and it's really not that bad, just a little time consuming. I even done it and I'm not known for getting too deep into the mechanical department. Good luck!

I've got a jack and jackstands, but was told it's a bitch to get too. Maybe I'll have to rethink the gasket and possibly do it myself. I just finished the passenger side valve cover gasket and need to tackle the drivers side in the next week or two.

There's just soooooo many things to tackle with this freaking car. I still love her though :D

If you can do a valve cover gasket, you can easily do the upgraded piston and spring swap. Just remember to get the drain pan back in place when you pull the piston out. More fluid is behind it but not much. Just enough to make a mess. Pull the magnet out, clean it very good and clean out the pan very good. I put a very thin coat of gasket sealant around the edges of the pan and laid my gasket on it while I done the rest of the work. Some use it and some don't. All I can say is that my transmission gasket is sealed and no leaks. I went back under it within 2 weeks to tighten the bolts once more and all were still tight. Don't over tighten the bolts. A good snug tighten will do it. Just check them again after a week of driving. If you don't drain the TC, you'll need about 6 quarts of Mercon V to replace what you drained. Putting new fluid in on top of the old 9 or 10 quarts is not recommended but if your fluid isn't burnt, you should be ok.

You should have been here last week when I changed out my IAC. I think I have 8mm wrenches in 3 different yards that I have to go find. Bad part about it is that I took a new one off the 93 out in the garage with less than 100 miles on it to put on my car. So it was take off, take off and then put on. Got everything back together and the hood back on the car just to start it and see the CE light on and a 1500 rpm idle. Stupid a$$ me forgot to plug the TPS back in before putting the TB back on. Had to take that back off again just to plug that up. Now she's running like a dream with an idle of around 700 and about 650 with the air on and no CE light. When you have to change the IAC, you'll be glad you have a GEN 2!
 
Nope. I've got the X3. I called today and he said he'll send me a new tune file. I told him to wait a few days because I'm going to get a dyno tune so he can see my a/f ratio after modding my exhaust setup. I know it won't be much, but I'm betting he'll be able to make my setup stronger as well as fix the tranny issues.

Nolimit you've got me gungho on doing this myself. I'm actually considering it. First I'm going to have the re-tune done. If it doesn't go away, I'll probably do the fix myself.

Go for it and even though you're having the tune done, you still need the piston & 2 spring upgrade. Once you get it down off the jack and go for a drive, you'll be proud that you actually got under there and done it yourself. When you get it done, call and ask how much it would have cost you to have someone else do it. You'll really like that answer. You might not even have a broken spring but at least you'll know you have the updated piston and 2 new springs.
