I just got done replacing my oil pan gasket without removing the oil pan all the way. I've done this for yrs (I'm a mechanic) on 5.0's and 4.6 in vics, etc. but this is the first time on a mark viii. Here's what I did. Removed alternator and supported engine with cross brace and lifted slightly after removing motor mount bolts. Removed the 8 torx subframe bolts. Removed 3 p/s line bolts that hold the brackets to subframe. Pried the bracket open that holds the battery cable under front of oil pan. Cleaned off area good and drained oil. Lowered subframe perhaps 1-2 inches. Lowered pan. Worked gasket around pan starting in front left corner. I did break original gasket by bending too tightly and it was 17 yrs old. Cleaned off surfaces. Worked new gasket up and around pan. Bolted back up. Took me 2 hrs and the hardest part was working with the battery cable brackets that got in the way of pan. Now I have to do the same thing on my son's Mark Viii. For people in rust belt areas, it may be better to let pan leak slightly to keep pan from rusting.
