Oil leak follow-up...

'02 Lincoln LSE / 3.9L V8 (58,000 miles)

I had previously posted my problem of oil leaking into my plug wells. I received a few posts all suggesting the valve/cam cover gaskets needing replacing. I just wanted to get further information.

1. could this be the same reason burnt oil has accumilated on top of the piston located where the plug well that has oil in it is?

2. it was stated that i need the 'gasket kit'; where is it best to get this? would a regular auto parts (Advance, Napa, Pep Boys) have it? or perhaps the ford/lincoln dealership?

3. does anyone have an estimate of around what this should cost to have done? would it take long, or even be feasible, to do myself (moderate mechanical skills)?

4. Is there any parts or work further suggested to do with this job? maybe any additives or cleaners I should use?

yes - the burnt oil smell - is likely oil sneaking past the gasket onto hot metal - engine block, heads and exhaust

dealer only - meaning you can also get it from Ford parts resellers like Team Ford, FastPartsNetwork.com, ...etc

$1,200 - $1,400 at the dealer for labour and parts. $300 for parts to do it yourself. It is a big job - not hard but tight spaces - a good solid days of work

7mm gear wrench from Lowes, all sort of socket knuckles and extensions.

Very possible

To have it done: $800-$1000
Do it yourself: $150
It can be done yourself with mild mechanical skills. You must follow the instructions completely and have a good socket set. My mechanical skills are moderate. I can do brakes, tune ups, alternators, stuff like that. It took me 11 hours, but I kept all that money!

You need black RTV sealant and a good socket set.

I payed $350 dollars to have the dealership install 2 Coils, LF & RH Gaskets & some engine clips. Another 250 when I bought parts from Team Ford. About $600 total for me.
 
Unless you REALLY enjoy busted knuckes, tight spaces, broken brittle plastic clips and hours bent over the fenders, I suggest doing the passenger side (easy), then taking it in to have the drivers side done. Save some $$ on the labor this way.
 
Pretty much everything everyone else said... However, I'm not sure where that $300 price tag for parts, doing it yourself came into play. Shouldn't be more than $150 if you're just doing the gasket kit. As far as difficulty... that's totally up to you to decide. What I say is a 5 on a scale of 1-10, could be an 8 for you... or could be a 2 for you. Best bet is for you to start off on the passenger side, just like someone said. That side is a breaze. Do that, if you feel as thought it was easy enough, tackle the driver's side. If you decide that was about your limit, then take it in and have the otherside done. It really isn't too bad if you've got some good tools, or are willing to buy the RIGHT tools, have a little mechanical thinking and some time. But I will tell you, it'll feel a lot better having that cash for labor in your pocket instead of a tech's pocket!
 
I agree...It seems intimidating but once you dig into it, it is not really that difficult to change the valve cover gaskets on the car. I took my time and changed both of them on a saturday afternoon/sunday. Since I replaced them myself, I bought the XCAL2 and still came out ahead (money-wise) from my quote to have the gaskets replaced locally!!!
 
- gaskets - $35 x 2 = $70
- coils -$60 x 8 = $420
- plugs - ~$25-ish

= $500 for parts....


without new tools, grease and other stuff....
