I'm doing this job for this first time; started this afternoon; drained everything and got all 4 bolts out; then realized I need to remove coolant hoses to remove the adapter from the block; thus far I can't get the pinch clamps on the short coolant hose between the adapter and the therm housing...any suggestions? I'm trying to reach them with a long handled pair of channel locks; is there something better? I already removed the PS reservoir
 
The cheaper way would be with a box cutter, cut that 6" hose in half and replace it and use new clamps that don't require $50 special tools to get off

+1 on Sapp's idea. Mine wasn't difficult (lucky?), but I replaced the hose while i had it apart anyway.
 
If I remember correctly, you don't need to remove the hoses from the adapter. Just pull the adapter away from the block, with the hoses attached, pull out the old gasket and slide the new one in and reinstall the bolts.
 
all 4 of those bolts made a snapping sound when they loosened, sounded like the head(s) broke off...made me poop myself
 
I still wish I had those pliers, I don't like destroying parts I might need again. I would still try and remove the adapter so you can clean both parts, don't want to be applying new gaskets to dirty surfaces.
 
It's been several years since I changed the one out on my old '96 Mark, but I think I just took the bolts out, pulled the adapter out, slid the old gasket out and slid the new one in and put it all back together. I remember it being a messy PITA but not as bad as I had been told it would be. I've got to do the one in the '97 next weekend or whenever I get time. So far I've had the kids with me every weekend since the separation (which is a good thing:)) so I haven't had a lot of time to do anything. But I'm off work until January 2nd. So maybe I can get something done.

1) I dunno why you'd be moving the overflow hose for room.
2) don't save old hoses- especially one that's that hard to change when a new one isn't but a couple bucks
3) find a Phillips head screw driver that fits inside that nipple, bevel the nipples broken edge a bit and use some epoxy to glue it back together. The screw driver will keep you from gluing the hole shut. Once the epoxy is set, pull the screw driver out. Don't use JB weld- it gets brittle, 3M makes some that's ina double cylinder tube (one side is blue, the other is clear)
 
Didn't have any problems with my spring clamp but did have to use a screw driver to turn it a little so I could put pliers on it. Did remove the housing for cleaning. Removed coolant reservoir to work on it from above and below and took my time so not to break anything. Think it took me 6 hours. I think I could cut a couple hours off it next time.....Good Luck!
 
I just did mine and it was a major pain and I had mine on a lift. Took two of us a good twenty minutes with channel locks and pry bars to get that stupid clamp off. It went right in the trash
 
well I finally was able to cut through the hoses on either side of the therm housing..now I'm fighting to get the o.f. adapter off the block..
YES all 4 bolts are out..... from underneath I can rotate it to/fro a little, but no more..I may be ready for that Accord or Cavalier before the day is over
 
I bet you removed a PS pump bolt, and there's still a bolt in the cooler housing... go take PICS
 
Looks like you removed a block bolt >.<... that's not good

Take that odd bolt in the group and go put it back WHERE IT GOES, remove the final bolt in the housing ...

Get a mirror wand for future jobs that don't allow you a direct eye view

Stick your finger on the edge of the housing if you can't see it, then trace around the edge so your brain can developed an image by feel.

- of course that cable is preventing me from putting a socket on it

This might help.

Replace the Main Bearing side bolt and torque to 14-16 Lb-Ft. :eek:

now for the hard part: putting it back together!
-can the old gasket show signs that it was causing a leak
 
Yeah.. the gasket will look flattened.. the rubber edge should have a slight lip when new. I'd strongly suggest changing the OPSU at the same time (use thread sealer on it) and remove the plug and re-seal it as well

The larger opening is the coolants passage, the 2 round ones are oil passages
 
Yes, that one bolt you took out that looks different is a main bearing cap side jack bolt - put it back in and tighten it up good (it's kind of important)!

All 4 of the bolts on the oil filter adapter gasket are the same.....

See the bottom bolt circled in this pic? I'm guessing you took out the bolt right underneath it:
