Odometer rollback???How can someone do this to the LS

I was bored and i decided to get a carfax on my car. I should of done so before i bought it too late now. Im confused now the report came back good stated that the vehicle checks out. Just with one minor problem, it said that my odometer has been rolled back. How can you do this and isn't this illeagal. Here's what it says.

A problem has been found with this vehicle's title.
A possible odometer rollback/rollover detected! We determine odometer rollbacks on your 2000 Lincoln LS (1LNHM87A9YY877647) by searching for records that indicate an odometer reading less than a previously reported value.

Now can you really drive a car over 50,000 miles in one year. And on two occasions. So over 100,000 in a three year spand.....The car is at 82000 now, and it drives fine. Well besides my coil problem now, but besides that it drives so smooth like it has 82,000. This was one of the reasons i bought this car because i thought it had fairly low miles and i could keep her for atleast 5yrs. Figuring i'd average about 12-15 k a yr.This kinda bums me out now, i paid 9k for it. Well i hope to get my coil problem fixed tomorrow, i just hope it's some kind of electrical error. Does anyone know how this was done or could it possibly be an error on the cars part. Or do you think someone has been tampering with it. Since now there is no way to find out the true mileage of my LS.
 
Carfax has been known to be incorrect on this type of thing before....

buy the only way I know how to roll back a odometer is to swap the guage cluster. This can only be done by a dealer since you have to re-marry the new cluster with the car's PCM. The dealer is them suppose to move the actual odometer readings form the old cluster to the new one. There are time when that is not possible - but very rare.

if you simply swap the cluster the tamper alarm sounds - IIRC, it beeps when you go over 50mph and when in reverse...
 
My wife used to put 10,000 a month on her Vee Dubb Golf when she was a road rep for a computer company- had most of the east coast as her territory. I was changing the oil almost every other week - so yeah it is very possible. She had over 200,000 when we sold It but it looked almost brand new since it was almost 100% highway miles.
worn accelerator petal and some stone chips in the front were pretty much it.

Carfax has been known to botch milage. I dont know of any other means to verify if they are right or wrong.
 
You would have to check with DMV in the state that it was registered in during that period.

If you contact them with a case of suspected odometer fraud they should work with you to determine the actual mileage on record.
 
The computer burns the mileage on a chip every 10 miles.
 
If I learned anything from Animaniacs when I was a kid, you can roll back the odometer by driving the car in reverse :D

Lou is probably right -- Carfax made a mistake. That's the simplest explanation at the moment.
 
Im not sure what the deal is, one thing is for sure someone made a mistake. On the title it does state TMU(True Mileage Unknown). She drives fine and doesn't look to old and wore down like a 150,000+ mileage engine does. Who knows as long as she keeps driving strong.
 
Looking at those mileage numbers and how close some of those dates are, most of those had to be taken from OASIS reports. Asking a dealer to pull the OASIS report for the car might be helpful, as it should list the services performed by the servicing dealer(s).

At any rate, if it's marked TMU, then there's no fraud. AFAIK, it's not illegal to have an incorrect odometer reading, only to represent the mileage as correct if the odometer is incorrect. Once the title and odometer statement were marked as True Miles Unknown, there was no fraud--it was properly disclosed. (Just like in politics, it's the cover-up that gets you.)
